Customer Reviews:

My first true HD set and it is outstanding!5
I spent the last couple of years researching televisions looking for the replacement for my Toshiba 50″ widescreen rear projection set. It was starting to have shudder problems on certain inputs and I was not going to go to the trouble of replacing parts on this older set.

Since I am a film junkie I have always leaned toward plasma sets due to their more accurate blacks and generally better handling of movement on screen. The drawbacks have been the glare issue, potential burn-in and power consumption versus LCD.

When I saw that Panasonic had addressed the burn-in and power consumption issues with their current series of plasma sets, I decided to look closer at the S1 series which is more attractively priced than their higher level TVs but with most of the same features.

My Toshiba died the day before Father’s Day (lucky me) and I bought the Panasonic TC-P54S1 on Father’s Day - an unexpected but appreciated gift to myself.

First impressions:
- Outstanding build quality. I sold electronics for about 5 years and Panasonic/Technics products were always well-built and very reliable. This set appears to continue that legacy. Panasonic is a large industrial manufacturer and builds their consumer products in the same way - well designed and well thought out with high quality components.

- Nice non-glare screen when off. I have two windows behind my viewing area that let light right onto the screen during the daytime. I can watch shows and movies without closing the curtains but their is a little noticeable glare. The set shows this less than my old projection set and with the curtains pulled it’s no issue.

- Cable viewing with component cables - generally good on non-HD channels and very good on HD channels with Charter cable. Cable viewing with HDMI (just got the new box yesterday) - noticeably improved over component input. HD channels are very clean - better than DVD on my old set. Go for HDMI to get the full benefit of this set.

- Nintendo Wii with analog cables - actually worse than the old set. With a new component cable the Wii image becomes much more solid and enjoyable. It’s not the best videogame for resolution anyway, but a component cable and this TV bring out the best in the system.

- Blu-ray DVD via HDMI - I bought the Panasonic DMP-BD60 Blu-ray player along with the TV. With this player (or, I imagine, any other blu-ray player) this set shines. I should re-phrase - this set is spectacular. I have seen Blu-ray demos in Best Buy and other stores, but in your own home, with direct connections and normal lighting, it is absolutely the best picture I have ever seen on a television. I ran Kill Bill 1 Blu-ray as my first movie and was floored. The quality is very film-like - clean, clear, vibrant, without a hint of grain or motion blur. I also watched Dirty Harry Blu-ray and GoodFellas Blu-ray and both were the best video images of these two movies I have ever seen.

- Regular DVD - there have been some reviews of this television on the web that stated it has trouble with upconversion. I could not tell this from my experience. Older DVDs were noticeably better looking than they were on my old set with a non-Blu-ray player. Some are so good that I won’t have to re-purchase as Blu-ray which is nice, since I have a sizeable investment in older DVDs.

The remote is as complete as it needs to be and easy to use. It is not backlit, but this is not an issue as I use a universal remote and put the regular remotes away as soon as I program them into the universal one.

I cannot speak to the picture settings yet as I have not fiddled with the manual settings or the presets. I will say that the pictures seems slightly dark on some DVDs and this makes sense as the factory settings are set up to reduce power consumption compared to older plasmas. I will definitely run a couple of set up discs through the set and alter the brightness and contrast a bit.

When I have really tuned the set, I will update this review. Suffice it to say that out of the box with no altered settings this set is outstanding. And the discounted price at several retailers is around $1700 so that makes it all the more attractive.

A Great TV!5
My choices were between the 58 inch Samsungs and the Panasonic 54G10. The Samsungs were too heavy and were said to have annoying “buzzing” sounds at certain volumes coming from their televisions. When I looked at the Panasonic 54G10, from a television-broadcast persepective, I was quite disappointed. The 54G10 looked somewhat jittery and blurry (I must admit, though, that from a blu-ray perspective that this tv looked very nice). On the other side, in a not so obvious part of the showroom was this other 54 inch Panasonic. The picture was very stable and the colors were vibrant. I looked at the model and saw that it was the TCP54S1. I asked about this televsion and not long after, decided to order it online, as I got a better deal.

When it was finally shipped, I examined it very carefully. To my eyes it looked good, but needed to be tweeked. On the cable tv side, I like how this panasonic looks in “game” mode. I watch the television solely in 1080i and 480p as these resolutions appear to look the clearest. I watch my Panasonic blu-ray player dmp60, in conjunction with the TCP54S1 in “standard” mode. EVERYTHING that I look at is FLAWLESS! Our family and friends are also taken aback as to how everything looks and sounds. For those who hate black bars while watching DVDs, the “Format” button on the remote allows you to zoom the picture without any noticeable picture degredation. I hope that this helps you make your decision on this very nicely made 90.4 lb. flat screen.

Great picture after break-in and tweaking5
I researched TVs extensively prior purchasing this TV. Both plasma and LCD have their respective strengths and weaknesses. I went with a plasma TV vs a LCD TV based the room the TV was going to be placed in and my viewing habits. I went with Panasonic after comparing various models in store and reading reviews.

In my opinion, this is the best TV at this price range. It is lacking some features of other Panasonic models (G10, Z, V Series) such as THX mode, more robust picture settings, and Viera Cast. However, these features were not deal breakers for me since I was going to be primarily using this TV for sports, tv shows and gaming. And from my understanding, the S1 series uses the same panel as the G10, Z, and V series. My non-videophile eyes could not tell a difference in picture quality between the G10 and S1 when I compared them at the store.

The picture quality was good initially, but got even better after the TV was broken-in. I did not get the TV professionally calibrated but got valuable tips on the proper settings for this TV from the AVS Forum website (as another reviewer pointed out). The picture quality is excellent, the colors are vibrant and accurate and the picture using a Hi-def source is sharp. I noticed that this TV is able to provide more details in dark scenes compared to my friend’s LCD TV and other plasma TV. The picture quality out the box is good, but superb after some setting changes and time.

The sound is adequate, but I recommend hooking it up to a surround sound system.

The bezel on the TV is a nice piano black but is a fingerprint magnet, but that is not a problem since I don’t touch the TV bezel on a regular basis. The anti-glare coating is effective. I don’t notice glare while watching TV during the day, in fact the only glare that I really notice is from the piano black bezel.

The bottom line is if you can’t afford the high-end TVs such as the Pioneer Kuro Series and just are looking for a TV with an excellent picture just to watch TV, you won’t be disappointed with the S1 Series.

Customer Reviews:

Great projector5
I do presentation for a living, and purchased this last week. This is my 5th projector, and looks to be the best so far. I must say that I do presentations from either PowerPoint or Litigation presentation software. I don’t watch movies via my projectors, so my review is only on the way I use them for presentations. It far exceeds my early projectors, so I will compare it with my last projecter. (what is now my backup)
My last projector was an Epson 1700 which is rated at 2500 lumens compared with the 3500 of the 1810. The 1810 is a noticeably brighter image.
The zoom on the 1810 is 1.6 compared with 1.2 for the 1700. This means when I do a presentation in a conference room I have a 6 foot range to move the projector toward the screen or away as compared to a 2 foot range with the 1700. I like to fill my screen with the image, and in the past I would have to move the projector if I inadvertently set it up too close, with the zoom on the 1810 it gives me much more flexibility.
I also like the 2 computer inputs that can be switched via the remote. The start up and shut down time is the same as the 1700 which is very fast. The image comes up in seconds after being turned on, and is at full brightness in less than a minute.
I was surprised at the difference in size between the 2 projectors. The 1810 is much larger and heavier. That is hard to tell from the images online.
All in all, I would recommend this projector for what I use it for.

Customer Reviews:

FORGET THE CNET REVIEW, GREAT SET!!! NOT SO ON WHITE GLOVE DELIVERY5
Like a previous poster I was very concerned about the not too good CNET review, but bought anyway based upon my son’s recommendation. I am very satisfied with what I’ve seen so far. It compares very favorably with my Sony Bravia that I paid considerably more for than the Aqous.

Set has excellent sound and provides very good audio output for surround system. The picture, onced adjusted away from the factory settings, is very vivid with great colors.

One caution to anyone ordering who might not be physcically able to lift a 51 pound tv set, the stand for the set must be assembled and attached to the set.

The “White Glove” delivery guys will not do it for you. They also will not connect any equipment (cable box, dvd, sat box, etc.) to the set. So, be prepared to have else available to do those things on delivery day.

All things considered, I’d do it again.

Good Tevevision, Terrible Customer Service, Defect4
I ordered Sharp Aquos LC46D85U on 12/23/08 by Amazon.com and received it on 01/02/09.
PROS:
I mainly bought this television for gaming, animation, and as a home theater tv, let me tell you it didn’t disappoint. Gamemode actually works, I did a test with Super Smash Bros. Melee with composite cables there seem to be no lag in gamemode, with component cables it looks much better and there seems to be zero lag in any of the tv’s AV Mode. Unlike the Samsung I had, game mode didn’t work with either cables that is if you’re an advance player and you do all your “L-Canceling” with your f,b,u,d-air. I wanted to know how this tv will fair against a HTPC, so I connected it to one though via HDMI instead of VGA. I was testing HD out and the color was so bright and deep anime(720p) in HD is awesome!! 5 HDMI ports and 120Hz is a bonus, free blueray player is just a promotion, I would have bought this tv without it. YES YES picture quality! Digital Channel’s look great, analog is okay too.
CONS:
Unfortunately my tv came with a defect with the power supply. On the day I receive the television I was excited to give it a try, so I hooked it up tried turning it on it just wouldn’t turn on until 15 minutes or so. The tv works fine afterwards until you leave it OFF for a FEW HOURS , the same problem would occur. It wouldn’t turn on a ” cold start” so I decide to contact customer service. I emailed Amazon and waited 2-3 hours for a reply, I didn’t get one so I called them. It was rather difficult to understand because I was talking to someone living OUTSIDE of US, she only asked for my info it took quite awhile she finally tried to redirect me to someone who can help but she said they were off. I was very upset, the next day I received the email from AMAZON, they told me to contact SHARP first and have a “case number” with them. I called Sharp, their customer service was terrible they told me if the dispatcher comes and nothing is wrong with the tv I had to pay for service on a BRAND NEW TV. With the defect I had the dispatcher could have came and said nothing was wrong with it if he/she was able to turn it on. I was extremely upset at that point, but I decided to put up with it and continue this daunting chain. Dispatcher called me the next day, he was on his way but Sharp gave him incorrect address and info for both of his customers that day including myself. Only thing that was correct was my “case number” and my “cell number.” The dispatcher took my tv and told me he’ll have it fix within 3 days. Three days now, so I give him a call he told me the part was on backorder now this really upsets me, he told that he will contact the part he is ordering and call me back. Never called me back so I called back, turns out he didn’t even make the call, finally I was put on hold and he told me that the tv will be finish tomorrow. Hopefully it will be finish.
CONCLUSION:
I’ve been an Amazon customer for about 2 years now and have never been disappoint up until now. Amazon and Sharp’s customer service was not helpful. I don’t mind waiting a little, but calling and waiting for a response was very time consuming. Amazon should just arrange for a replacement, not make me contact Sharp first. 4 Stars for Tv’s quality minus 1 star for defect, but mainly for customer service from Amazon and Sharp. I apologize for the long compliant, but I’m extremely upset with customer service and had to make sure everyone knows. Although I recommend this television I don’t recommend buying it here as customer service was terrible. Good Television otherwise, amazing picture quality like some reviews have stated. Take my word if you have the money spend an extra hundred or two and buy it in stores.
UPDATES:
The power supply was replace on 01/09/09 as promised, but problem was not resolved. It was rechecked and delievered once again on the 01/12/09 but the problem was still occurring. He told me from day one that the problem could either be the power supply or control panel. So my local dispatcher replace the control panel board and delivered the television the next day. Everytime the dispatcher delivered the tv, he was always reassuring me that he will get it fix, if not Sharp will personally replace it. After a few days of testing the issue is finally RESOLVED on 01/13/09. The TV came back with some minor scratches (only visible up close) on the frame which doesn’t concern me and no visible scratches on the LCD. I was concern about the quality of the tv after repair, but I guess it still okay now. Sorry, this is not really a good review on the tv itself but just some issue you might encounter.
FINAL COMMENTS:
2D fighting games seems to be lagless on ps2 with component cables, I’m pretty sure DDR and Guitar Hero will be lagless too. Cables Matter. Oh, I forgot to mention that yes this model has a 10 bit LCD panel. Not really sure what this is yet, but I’m pretty sure that it has something to do with the quality rather than a 8 bit panel. Thank you for your time!

Regards Diana

It’s a great set and I would compare it favorably to any Sony that my peers have. No problems thus far.

60ex700 - great picture and features, nice sharp x-gen panel5
I got my 60ex700 yesterday and I am really happy with it. It is a great TV. There was a little flashlighting and uniformity is not perfect but it seems you can tune it quite a bit. There are an amazing amount of settings and I have it set to be more than acceptable for me. Great price on a great TV. Contrast is great with deep blacks and white whites. The motionflow is great also.

Furthermore, the sound is acceptable for normal viewing and much better than I expected due to all the people dissing it. I have a nice theater 5.1 setup but I don’t want to use that for everything and the sony sound is just fine.

Netflix and internet stuff is great, the remote is fine. This technology is getting so good we are really picking nits at this point. I just hope it is engineered to be reliable and long lasting because I intend on having this in my living room for the next 6-10 years.

I am sure you can spend a lot more and buy a better TV with better picture quality but for this price… killer TV.

The only downside is the TV is so damn thin and light that I feel nervous holding the bezel when I have to put in the inputs. It is solidly built but it just looks so fragile.

BIG-Time HDTV5
Purchased this Sony HDTV almost a month ago to replace the 42″ LCD in the Man Cave…so far, so good. I actually purchased the KDL60EX701 model…from what I can tell, there are no differences between this model and the KDL60EX700. So, here are my observations…

Setup - Easy. I have a single HDMI cable coming from the A/V receiver that plugs into the back of the HDTV, so it doesn’t get any simpler than that. When you turn on the HDTV for the first time, you will be prompted to enter some basic settings…it’s pretty straightforward and only takes a few minutes to complete. The menu setup is easy to navigate through…those of you who have PS3s & PSPs will find it really easy, as the menu system is identical to the ones found on those devices.

Performance - Excellent. Watching anything in HD on this TV is incredible. Everything comes at you in crisp and vivid detail. There are numerous settings you can go through to get the “perfect” picture…fortunately, I didn’t have to change too many of the default settings to get the picture I wanted. I’ve watched Avatar a few times already and spotted something new I didn’t notice from before! Sporting events show up great with very little or no blurring, which is always a good thing for a sports nut like me. SD broadcasts and DVDs aren’t quite as crisp-looking as their HD and Blu-Ray counterparts, but that’s to be expected of 480i/p. The only issue I have is that the colors tend to fade when viewing from a severe angle. However, the screen is so freakin’ large…chances are you won’t be watching TV from a severe angle on this thing.

Sound - Good. HDTVs like this are meant for home theaters, not stand-alone setups! However, I did play a couple of MP3 files from a USB drive just to hear the audio quality from the built-in speakers, and it was decent.

Extras - Excellent. The USB port is convenient for showing pictures and playing music from a flash drive. I have yet to use any of the Internet streaming features (Netflix, Amazon VOD,…) as I have been too lazy to connect it to my home network. It does come with a separate wireless adapter and a built-in LAN port for your convenience.

Overall - Excellent. The picture quality is just as good if not better than most of the other HDTVs currently available. I considered getting the 240Hz version of this HDTV, but there is no discernible difference in picture quality when watching sports or action movies (at least not for me). Bottom line…if you’re not in any hurry to get a 3-D HDTV, or if you aren’t finicky enough to want a full back-lit LED LCD, then I recommend getting this HDTV.
