The 80’s gave us a golden age of Saturday morning cartoons. I can’t deem of any other era that had such a wide variety of different themes and approaches. These days most shows drop into the Japanese anime/card game genre. Wait On then you had several genres. One of them was the child honorable, parent popular, sugary sweet cutesy cartoons. The Smurfs has to be the top of the heap of those shows. The reason being was beneficial production values and solid pacing of their stories which makes even a sedate and “helpful” exhibit fun to ogle.

My first experience with the Smurfs wasn’t this television. In fact my first exposure to the itsy-bitsy blue creatures were in the execute of microscopic plastic figurines sold at the local Hallmark card store. I only knew of them as different limited blue guys who wore different clothes that apparently denoted their profession or interest (I personally had the Karate Smurf and the Police Smurf) and they were created by somebody named Peyo (according to box that held the Smurfs) . The television translation of the only thing I know about Smurfs was different, but appropriate.

You perceive every Smurt in the cartoon has some characteristic, trade, or skill that sets them apart from the rest. In this colony of 100 Smurfs you would have a baker, poet, carpenter and other useful trades along with Smurfs who were indolent, clumsy, vain (and were named as such) . Each episode was about their interacting with each other and their surroundings based on who they were. Top it all off with a Papa Smurf to withhold them all in line and a human wizard named Gargamel who wants (of all things) to eat the Smurfs and gain the gist of present.

This simplistic premise was all you needed to do a fun, if overly cutesy, series that would evolve each season with unusual characters and themes. One of the most memorable things about the indicate was the employ of classical music played in it’s bulky brilliance. Not toned down or “lightened up” for the kids. It helped give me a honorable appreciation of the genre of music at a young age. The animation was solid and the style of the display actually lended itself to the slight frames per second that Saturday morning cartoons were stuck with to hold their budget extreme.

Some might overly analyze the reveal and peek things like how the Smurf commune and soceity promote communism. To be fair that’s what they were. Communists. Everybody helped out in the betterment of their society as a whole and apparently everything was shared. The theory of communism would actually work in such a itsy-bitsy community if done apt, and the Smurfs didn’t have such hangups over greed and power that normally keeps any utopian ideal from happening… or at least Pappa Smurf was always there to withhold his Smurfs from taking it too far.

What you are getting in this DVD plot is the first half of the first season. The unique thought was to set aside all 28 episodes onto one situation, but apparently the studio changed their mind and now you secure 19 episodes. Level-headed that’s six hours of voice. On top of the standard eps you also regain two bonus features: The Smurfs Springtime Special (an Easter holiday special) and Smurfs: The Music Video (which is not great more than the title theme with clip highlights of the demonstrate place to the music) . Not worthy else on the extras category.

The capable news is this DVD location has been remastered and Warner Home Video announced that the episodes are uncut. For purists that’s really the only critical thing. Don’t seek information from Dolby Digital or anything like that. This is strictly a monophonic affair honest like the point to was abet in the 80’s. If you have kids and don’t want them to discover anything too violent or socially disruptive then this is a qualified present for you. For those of you who remembered the Smurf from when you were kids and long for their return here you go.

Join the lovable, still, fun-lovin’ Smurfs as they outwit the unsuitable wizard Gargamel and his pet cat Azreal in 19 Smurf-arrific episodes from the Hanna-Barbera-produced, Emmy-nominated appealing series in The Smurfs - Season One, Volume One.

Starring the aged grunt talents of Paul Winchell (Winnie the Pooh), Lucille Bliss (Set Kidettes), Frank Welker (Scooby-Doo), Don Messick (Jonny Quest), June Foray (Rocky & Bullwinkle) and many others, The Smurfs was a monster Saturday morning hit for NBC, lasting for nine seasons (1981-1990) .

Season One of The Smurfs originally aired as an hour-long explain, comprised of two eleven small episodes and one chubby half-hour episode. Because episodes were repeated as early as Display #3, resulting in more repeats than recent episodes being aired, Warner Home Video gives you the episodes in unique order from Season One’s hour-long format, minus all the repeats.

The Smurfs - Season One, Volume One is a 2-disc (345 min.) situation featuring 19 digitally remastered and uncut episodes (complete with unique broadcast version title screens) ; Rotund Frame (1.33:1) video; English Mono audio; English subtitles; plus extras. I, too, have been crossing my fingers every day since I read “Operaman’s” review above. Been waiting for years for a complete version of that Met’s astounding celebration. I check the DG Situation daily and today I saw that they added more details…the Track Listings for DVD #1 and DVD #2. So, apparently, there are two DVDs….BUT…..DG simply divided the musty Pioneer version into the recent DG version. Same selections and timings. I did pre-order it anyway because I’m distinct that the Video and Audio will be far better than the stale one. I can’t imagine that DG will be issuing a more complete version…so this is gonna be it for all of us Met lovers. If anyone finds and my information is tainted, please let me know and right me. Thanks.

…but, to quote Spencer Tracy’s line from “Pat and Mike,” “what’s there, is cherce.”

How can you rob highlights from highlights? : The final duet from “Chenier,” sung by two of Spain’s greatest gifts to the world of music, Caballe and Carerras? McCracken, returning to the Met after a five-year absence, to bring down the house with Otello’s huge “Dio mi potevi”? Freni and Domingo’s “Otello” Duet? Sign and Pav’s from “Ballo”? The mind reels with a feast of the finest. This was the creme de la creme of the opera world, circa 1983.

Only a couple of minor cavils: Couldn’t they have retained Osie Hawkins’ introduction of the guests of honor in the second half (Rise Stevens and Marilyn Horne embracing after the latter’s “Mon Ceur,” Feruccio Tagliavini looking hopelessly bored during the “Faust” trio)? How about Moffo and Merrill’s co-farewell to the house with “Will You Remember? “?

Wow, after all these years, the first season of In Living Color is being released on DVD. I’m so mad to ogle Men on Film/Football/Vacation, Homey D. Clown, and the rest of one of the greatest comedy shows of all time. It’s where Jim Carrey got distinguished, and we all learned the best ways to insult someone’s Mama. For anyone who loves to laugh for long periods of time, this is definitely a recall for you. Am I going to miss out on this situation? I don’t consider so… Homey don’t play dat…

“In Living Color” was so unique, energetic, and hilarious when it first hit the Fox airwaves that you wondered how it could possibly hold up that level of entertainment. Well, it couldn’t, exactly, but those first few shows, and many moments during the rest of the season, were insanely silly and groundbreaking.

Like all first-rate sketch comedy, “In Living Color” immediately status out to execute its gain collection of recurring crazies (rather than the modern SNL-method of mostly relying on celeb impressions), and observe at how many tranquil resonate: Fire Marshal Bill, the Men on Film, Anton, Homey…and so on. The show’s genius is that it went for laughs anywhere it could - it could be richly satirical or downright amusing and scatalogical, often in the same sketch. It basically counted on the intelligence and variety of its audience in a diagram that we haven’t seen since, except maybe with “The Daily Reveal.” “In Living Color” was edgy to the point of discomfort sometimes, but we wanted that too - everything else felt saccharine and well-behaved next to “ILC,” and we were ready to push some boundaries.

Eventually “In Living Color” would degenerate into low-minded skits based on grotesque impressions, gross-outs, and cruelty. But for one brief brilliant moment - captured on this DVD position - we all wanted to live In Living Color.

The first time I saw this movie, I was struck mostly by how remarkable fun it was to examine. There is an offbeat, good-natured humour that softens the harshness of some of the settings and situations. (Worthy of the music is beautiful–it’s by Robbie Robertson but he’s not mentioned for it in the credits.) The sage line is well-developed, with splendid transitions between two converging sub-plots. The basic status is quite simple: two friends, Philbert Bono (Gary Farmer) and Buddy RedBow (A Martinez) remove off on a road scamper from a Montana Indian reservation to Fresh Mexico in order to accept RedBow’s sister out of jail. Along the device they acquire a friendship, despite differences in personality and ways of looking at life.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Pow Wow Highway! Click Here

Upon the second viewing, it became distinct to me that noteworthy of what divides them in the beginning has to do with different styles of being or becoming a “warrior.” Redbow is a Vietnam vet, as well as an activist who had been indicate at the Wounded Knee conflict. He has a lot of infuriate about the depredations of white people as well as, I suspect, his Vietnam experience. His belief of carrying out a campaign has to do with fighting, guns, and discharging rage.

Philbert Bono, on the other hand, has never seen any combat action. He’s a level-headed sort and regarded by others as an overweight buffoon. However, he’s on a spiritual quest to find power and become a spiritual warrior. His opinion of carrying out a campaign has to do with getting the universal forces on his side.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Pow Wow Highway! Click Here

By the kill of the film the two men have worked out a strong friendship and respectful working relationship, but it is clearly Philbert’s arrive to warriorship which carries more weight in the final victory. The movie does have a few space flaws, but they are insignificant compared to the interest evoked by Philbert Bono’s go, which is one of inner seeking combined with action in the outer world.

This deceptively simple “road buddy” film was first introduced to me in 1991 when I was researching Native American culture for my 2 children so they would better understand their heritage. What a feast for the eyes, ears and spirit! The glean, some of it by Robbie Robertson (U2) is a wonderfully effective backdrop that carries us into the world of one Native American’s new vision quest. One scene that comes to mind is when the gentle Cheyenne named Philbert Bono (Gary Farmer) surveys a outmoded junk yard chubby of wrecked cars, but sees instead a herd of wild ponies galloping on the boring. His choice of a “pony” is a broken down Buick, yet to him it’s as worthy as any horse that ever ran. And so it goes. A. Martinez is facinating as Buddy RedBow, Philbert’s activist friend who joins him on the road. The film weaves together humor and pathos, fantasy and realism for a narrative that entertains while it touches the spirit and makes one feel,at least for a runt while, as if life could indeed be as Philbert sees it; and wouldn’t that be a fabulous, magical thing! I have not seen this film since 1992 and conception I might never again. That Pow Wow Highway is available now is a dream near lawful. I cannot recommend it highly enough!

If it weren’t for this anecdote, I would be left scratching my head and wondering why the hell these four individuals (they were barely a TARDIS team) would hang around each other for so long. Adric unbiased becomes an defective brat with the Fifth Doctor, Tegan objective wants to go home, and Nyssa gets shunted to the sidelines every damn time. With the Sixth Doctor and Peri, there were moments in every anecdote where you could deliver they were finish friends, which is absent with this team.

Except for this chronicle.

Black Orchid, a two-parter that’s a bit of a diversion, but it was needed, in my understanding, before the emotional-roller coaster known as Earthshock. A light-hearted adventure that you can sit down and relax to after doing a long shift of work, or even if you’ve advance from a night about the town (like I did on the day I bought this.) The Fifth Doctor and Nyssa, the best Fifth Doctor combination, both gather to shine here, Nyssa with Sarah Sutton’s double role with Ann, finally giving Nyssa something to do in a sage, and the Fifth Doctor, who shows off his improbable cricket skills, bringing a team assist from a pathetic gather (though I don’t reflect even the Fifth Doctor could back England against Australia!)

Buy,Download, Or Stream Doctor Who - Black Orchid! Click Here

And where the TARDIS crew accept along? The scenes at Cranleigh Manor are easily some of my favourite of the Fifth Doctor era, where Tegan shows Nyssa some of the Earth dances and cheering on the Doctor in cricket, and Nyssa honest looks more amused than ever at these bizarre rituals. Not to mention where they both gently mock Adric about his constant eating (how spacious are Alzarian stomachs anyway? ) Adric for once is actually likeable.

Surprisingly, there are no science fiction elements whatsoever, a throwback to the early Doctor Who days where sci-fi and history genres went hand-in-hand, it’s more like a assassinate mystery, a whodunit, where the Doctor becomes trapped while getting ready for the costume ball at Cranleigh Manor, and someone takes his space wearing the clown costume, “Attacking” Ann, and killing a servant who tries to back her…

All in all, one of my favourite Davison stories, and one you can recognize and objective be pleased.

In this short adventure with the fifth Doctor, the Doctor and his over elephantine TARDIS raze up in the Edwardian English country-side for this almost purely historical (the first record to due so possible since the 2nd Doctor meets the Highlander, please apt me if I’m defective on that net) .

The Doctor lands the TARDIS at an Edwardian explain depot, where he is mysteriously expected by some local chaps for a game of cricket. Only joyful to oblige, the Doctor tags along with Adric, the boy genius, Tegan, the walking mouth, and Nyssa, the shimmering & cute orphan from Traken. This case of incorrect identity leads the crew into a manor mystery Agatha Christie-style and a fancy-dress ball. Nyssa meets her Earth-twin and a zigzag “monster” who may not have her best interests at heart.

As is the plot of things in the 5th Doctor’s era, the incidental companions demolish up learning of the Doctor’s lawful origins or of the TARDIS. This status way has been replaced in the unusual series by the Doctor’s psychic paper, so he doesn’t have to slay precious story-time with answering questions about “how he got there.”

What keeps Shadowy Orchid from being a tidy historical adventure?

As is the blueprint of things in the 5th Doctor’s era, the incidental companions demolish up learning of the Doctor’s correct origins or of the TARDIS. This area way has been replaced in the unique series by the Doctor’s psychic paper, so he doesn’t have to demolish precious story-time with answering questions about “how he got there.” This nearly pointless visit to the TARDIS takes away from the mystery of the period. Another mistake is the overly ambitious make-up team that in the lack of an alien, they must compensate with latex.

What makes Dark Orchid work? The elegant region footage, which is always a staple of the series, the cricket game footage is really charming and are the costumes of the period and the fancy-dress as well.

Some of the dialogue is clunky, but overall consistent with the theme.

The chronicle is a short 2 parter (thus the grievous selling label) which the current series has proved is the draw of things for the 21st century viewer, so this one may be more accessible for fans who are unbiased discovering the new shows.

As far as the extras go, the cast is really down on this particular myth. Their personal experiences relayed during the audio commentary are some of the most negative & abrasive you will hear tied to a DVD, but train-wreck captivating.

Possible Doctor Who drinking games.

This is one of those films that I expected to relish considerable less than many of my family’s Disney favorites. As it turned out, both my children and my wife and I like the movie immensely.

The touching yarn of Minute Foot, the last remaining member of his family of Brontosauruses (Brontosauri? ), is a sizable adventure as well. He joins up with younger members of other dinosaur families as they all trip to the Sizable Valley in search of food.

Along the design they encounter hunger, thirst, earthquakes, and, not least of all, the dreaded Sharptooth. The feel of the dinosaur age is well presented and the characters are cute without being saccharine (and they don’t protest!) .

The lesson that friends can be friends even though they don’t glimpse like you or act honest like you is a nice one for kids to contemplate. The opinion that working together is primary for reaching a goal is also a essential one.

Having owned a VHS copy of the movie, I was anxious to gape the DVD. The result on this particular version is very dissappointing.

First, the version is full-screen with no wide-screen option. This seems to be a minor jam since most of the action seems to recall dwelling center cover. It would have been nice to have the option for widescreen, however.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Land Before Time! Click Here

Secondly, the color and brightness varies widely from scene to scene (and, more jarringly, sometimes within a scene) . The opening scene, which starts underwater, is actually darker and less keen than on the VHS version. In several serene, close-up scenes the narrate will be perfectly exposed and then the record will shift to a darker ogle and then serve. Very annoying. Various nicks and scratches appear throughout the film - it appears that no misfortune was made to well-kept up the video master at all.

There were also no extras on the disc at all, and at the designate of this DVD, you would inquire a shrimp more than honest the movie and chapter selections. Disney issued their first few DVDs with miniature problems like this: no widescreen option, varying degrees of video quality, etc. They however, have moved to a more consistent product over the last six months. Hopefully, movies like The Land Before Time will be given better treatment in the future. This one in particular deserves better than it got.

A lot of people are commenting about how negative and depressing this movie is. Well, not all kids are looking for a rainbows-and-cotton-candy kind of film. This was one of my celebrated movies as a child. Clear, maybe I was a shrimp detached to what was really happening, but I found nothing depressing about the film. Yes, it’s black and yes the joyful ending isn’t a disney-type ecstatic, but I’m definite that doesn’t really matter to most kids.

As one of two teenage vampire movies released in 1987, (the other was the dejected “Arrive Black”) “The Lost Boys,” is a hip, new retelling of the vampire sage place in a Southern California setting. Brothers Michael (Patric) and Sam (Haim) are the newcomers to the miniature seaside town of Santa Clara, which is known as the execute capital of the world due to the mysterious disappearances of many town residents.

At the town’s amusement park, Michael gets himself interested with a gang of vampires, who appear as normal street punks. Meanwhile Sam, meets the Frog Brothers, who race a laughable book store at night, but are vampire hunters by day. After Michael himself becomes a vampire due to drinking the blood of a vampire, he is distinct to score a method to keep himself, the girl he loves, and his family from the impending misfortune that lurks them.

Directed by Joel Schumacher (”Batman Forever,” “Batman & Robin,” “Flatliners,” etc.), the film’s appeal to teenagers is due to its young cast, mammoth soundtrack, and big, yet campy storyline. Dianne Wiest is honorable as Michael and Sam’s mother, and Kiefer Sutherland in one of his first major roles is bad as David, the leader of the gang.

Keep an ogle out for a pre-”Bill & Ted’s Reliable Adveture” Alex Winter as Marco, one of the vampires. This film also marked the first collaboration of the two Cories, Cory Haim & Cory Feldman, in a string of movies they made together in the 1980’s (”License to Drive,” “Dream A Exiguous Dream,” etc.) that capitalized on their teen-idol spot. Reportedley, Jason Patric (who is Jackie Gleason’s grandson) hates it when fans mention this movie as one of his best works, but the truth is it quiet remains one of the behind 1980’s cult classics.

If you like a laughable, yet scary movie in the same tradition as “Scram,” then check out this movie. It gave me many memories watching it on DVD as it did when I first saw it at the theater.

When a single mother (Dianne Wiest) and her two kids (Jason Patric, Corey Haim) pack up and disappear from Phoenix to southern California, more specifically, Santa Carla, “the destroy capital of the world,” they have more than a small bit of adjusting to do. The two teens and their mother travel in with their quirky but loveable grandfather (Barnard Hughes), who has an inkling that there is more to this town than meets the scrutinize. At first, things seem different but manageable, until Sam meets the “Frog brothers” at the local amusing book shop. They hand him a scare humorous about vampires and deliver him to assume of it as a survival manual. Are these two merely kids with an over-active imagination, or is there some supernatural cause for this peculiar dinky coastal town’s nickname?

When the older brother, Michael, goes into town for a live concert, he runs into a rather handsome woman named Star (Jami Gertz) . Star introduces Michael to her friends, who unbiased happen to be vampires, and they choose to invite Michael to be one of them. Unbeknownst to Michael, he drinks the blood of David (Kiefer Sutherland), the leader of a band of motorcycle riding teenage vampires, thus giving Michael this supernatural unlit gift. However, he must earn his first slay before becoming a right creature of the night. Only one thing can keep Michael from an eternity of bloodsucking. The head vampire must be killed. But who is the head vampire, and can he be found before Michael gives in to temptation? Will Sam and his newfound friends be willing and able to abet Michael before it’s too behind?

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Lost Boys! Click Here

This film is a classic, light-hearted 80’s foray into the fright genre, complete with spoiled wardrobe, glam rock, goofy humor, and a stellar cast performing a mountainous screenplay with a cohesive situation. There are indeed some vast lines in this film that are quite memorable. The Frog brothers, in particular, help as some cute humorous relief. The effects and make-up are outstanding, and this is really noticeable in the final, knock-down, drag-out fight in the destroy of the movie. The cinematography is also really well done (for example, the aerial shots when the vampires are flying towards the house) .

This movie is not meant to be taken very seriously, and it is certainly not Anne Rice or Bram Stoker by any means, but it is some enormous old weekend entertainment. Overall this is a ample movie that everyone who grew up in the 80’s should definitely hold. Moreover, it’s a titanic addition to anyone’s vampire or scare collection. If you can delight in a light-hearted romp through vampire mythology, then definitely acquire this film up!

A diminutive downside to this DVD is that there are few extras. If you merely want a grand movie at a gross heed, then rob up this DVD. Otherwise, there is a two-disc place coming out soon that should be worth checking out!

This movie literally made me tumble in adore….with Ireland, it’s legends, it’s music and especially with a clear leprechaun named Mickey Muldoon (Daniel Betts, a phenominal young actor.) The tale was creative while staying accurate to the musty Irish tales, and Shakespear’s “Romeo and Juliet” theme was never conventional to better advantage. There were a few incongruities, and Randy Quaid and Whoopi Goldberg seemed to be cast only for their star-power. Also, while my young teenaged daughters enjoyed the whole movie, the smaller children understanding that the sections encompassing the human treasure sage were a bit long. But when the movie focused on the trusty “faerie epic” it was truly involving for all interested. The broad majority of the acting was apt, the musical rep was curious, the special effects were very well done, and the entire experience was extremely delectable. I highly recommend this movie for anyone who ever had a romantic bone in their body, ever loved a fairy story, or ever dreamed of Ireland.

I couldn’t beleive two of the negative reviews I saw posted, but was heartened to seek the rest were overwhelmingly obvious. They should be. This is a pleasing, tender, droll bit of fantasy. The acting is great, the special effects are some of the best I have ever seen, and the director shows a deft hand in presenting a ample script. It is a movie that lingers with you long after you eye it, and you often wish there were such a land. Well, there is, and you can visit it every time you study this movie. Thanks for making this type of movie and for the astonishing job you did on it. Don’t let the snobs and other nay-sayers discourage you. The mountainous majority of us loved it and want more! I’m buying the film because it is a five star work of art.

I can’t mediate of a substantial enough cynic who can dismiss the charms of this movie. On my list, Paper Moon qualifies as one of the best comedies ever made, a mixture of childlike wonder and wry sarcasm, simultaneously serene in its myth reach (thanks to wonderful understated camerawork) and intimate.

The script has no faults. Scenes hurtle forward at a brisk but never hyper waddle, every moment pregnant with character development and captivating dialogue. Ryan and Tatum O’Neal’s exchanges are pristine in their amusing timing, side-splitting and touching at the same time, effortlessly exploiting the chemistry between father and daughter. Their scenes in the car are so hilarious and endearing that you’d wish you could waddle with them for hours longer. And the film is rich in period flavour, from the stark black-and-white photography to the music to every character, evoking a sense of longing for a more innocent age without ever lapsing into downright nostalgia. The themes — the vagabond heart which can’t stand peaceful, growing up, identity, friendship — ring as factual today as they always did.

I saw this movie when I was quite young and it’s never lost its magical own on me. Gape it again even if you have already; you will contemplate something original every time.

Adapted from the matchless recent “Addie Pray” by Joe David Brown, Paper Moon is site in the Midwest/dustbowl during the Substantial Depression/Roosevelt era. One-of-a-kind directing by Peter Bogdanovich, pleasing dim & white cinematography, a grand musical earn with snippets of passe time radio shows like Fibber McGee & Molly, Jack Benny and a host of others.

Real-life father & daughter duo, Ryan & Tatum O’Neil team up in this gem of a movie.

Ryan plays Moses Pray. A slick, sliver-tongued, gold toothed, travelling huckster & who always has a fresh con to turn up his sleeve such as door to door Bible selling to recently widowed women, bootlegging, short changing, and a “car swappin’ wrasslin’ match” between Moses and a very young Randy Quaid. Tatum plays Addie and garnered the coveted Oscar for her performance at the tender age of 10. Addie decides to net in on many of the cons and becomes quite a prolific short change artist. Addie decides on her beget to select Moses’ last name and recede with him under the guise as his daughter. In one of the best scenes in the movie they deal with whether or not Addie is Moses’ illegitimate daughter. That scene is location in a diner while drinking NeHi’s and eating Coney Islands. Addie is determined that Moses is, indeed, her father as she states, “We got the SAME jaw!” Moses responds and says, “I know a lady who has the jaw of a bullfrog but that doesn’t mean that she’s the damn things mother!” Addie asks Moses, “You meet my mamma in a barroom? ” (implying that her mamma was a prostitute) . Moses comes legal attend asking Addie, “You judge that impartial because a man meets a woman in a barroom means that they fetch a baby? ” Ryan and Tatum’s bantering repartee is natural, hilarious and touching all at the same time.

The Prays plunge “prey” to a con played on them (well, Moses anyway) as the film progesses, by a hootchie-cootchie sideshow carnival dancer/prostitute named Miss Trixie Delight, adeptly played by Madelyn Kahn who was also nominated for an Oscar. The sneaky and a dinky jealous Addie deals with Miss Trixie in her enjoy time and also helps out Miss Trixie’s maid, Imogene and gives her money to return succor to her family.
