Upon its release in 1981, John Irvin’s version of Peter Straub’s bestselling horror novel was deemed one of the worst adaptations that the genre had ever produced. Now it’s available on DVD, and for the first time in widescreen presentation, and not much has changed. It’s still a nearly unwatchable dud. Fred Astaire, John Houseman, Melvyn Douglas, and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. play old friends, members of the self-created Chowder Society, who get together and tell ghost tales. The scariest story of all, however, is the one they never speak to each other. Fifty years ago, the four men accidentally killed a young woman, and now she’s back (with much less meat on her bones) and seeking vengeance. Sound chilling? Well, in Straub’s hands it was, and the novel remains the author’s finest achievement. Irvin, however, distills Staub’s rich characterizations, gradual tension, and creepy atmosphere, and replaces them with aging golden oldies (only Houseman appears to be having any fun) hamming it up and hokey special-effect shots of a rotting corpse. The film moves about as quickly as its ancient cast could during a relay race. The whole thing has arthritis. –Dave McCoy

Independent producer and author John Pierson (Spike, Mike, Slackers and Dykes) defines the 1970s American indie scene as “the three Johns: John Cassavetes, John Sayles, and John Waters.” John Waters, Baltimore’s king of sleaze, in such classy company? According to Pierson in this 1998 documentary, Waters had an even more profound impact on American cinema. Director Steve Yeager, a Waters intimate for decades (he plays a bit part in Pink Flamingos), gathers the surviving members of his stock company for a portrait of the director, from backyard puppet show impresario to the transgressive underground and exploitation director who grossed out America in the 1970s. A generous array of film clips is enriched with archival interviews with Divine, David Lochary, and Edith Massey, and a chorus of film critics and underground and independent directors.
Fully half of the film chronicles the making of Pink Flamingos, with actual behind-the-scenes footage from the shoot (including the most priceless direction ever captured on film: “David, act some more”). A plentiful portion pays tribute to Divine (”the Godzilla of drag qUns”), whom Waters calls “my Elizabeth Taylor.” The only real disappointment in this rich and highly entertaining documentary is that it ends with Flamingos, as if his entire career since is a mere coda to this cultural touchstone. But this portrait is so rich and detailed that it’s a forgivable directorial choice. –Sean Axmaker

On his 13th birthday, Tyson beats Kai to become National Beyblade Champion. Kai’s team, the Blade Sharks, is forgotten as he, Tyson, Max, and Ray become teammates (with Kenny as computer guru) headed for a tournament in Asia. While the others celebrate their new identity as The Bladebreakers and develop an espirit de corps, Kai remains aloof and arrogant. In Hong Kong, the quintet encounters Ray’s former team, the White Tigers. Ray apparently left under less than amicable circumstances, and there are old scores to settle. The White Tigers are clearly bad guys, but they’re a little too eager to steal and sabotage their opponents for characters in a show aimed at small boys. The storytelling is awkward, with plot points beginning and ending arbitrarily, and director Toshifumi Kawase fails to infuse the matches with much excitement, weakening the focus of the series.
