The hungry, haunted eyes of the voluptuous Daliah Lavi dominate Mario Bava’s kinky little ghost story. Set in a cavernous castle on a lonely coast, it looks like something out of Roger Corman’s Edgar Allen Poe thrillers, at least at first. Christopher Lee is the bad sheep prodigal son who returns to the family manor. A sexual sadist whose proclivities brought about the death of a young girl and sent him into exile, he immediately lures his brother’s wife (Lavi) into his sadistic games upon his return. There’s no shortage of suspects when he’s found dead, a dagger plunged into his neck (the same one his former lover killed herself with), but when he returns as a gray-faced ghost Bava pushes the gothic conventions and repressed sexual desires into delirious territory. It’s one of the most psychologically compelling scripts in Bava’s filmography, wracked with mad passions and haunted with guilt, and he pushes the emotional hysteria to the limits with lush style, surreal color, and gorgeous, often perverse imagery. The film was drastically cut and renamed What! for its U.S. release. VCI’s edition is not only completely uncut but mastered from a gorgeous, color drenched print, restoring Bava’s rich play of crimson red and cerulean blu.

The DVD features both English and Italian language soundtracks (neither of which feature Lee’s voice, though the English track better matches the images) with optional subtitles, a sharp, informative commentary track by Bava historian Tim Lucas, and two cut scenes hidden as “Easter Eggs.” To access these, go to the Special Features menu, move the cursor to “Play American Titles,” and push the left arrow button. –Sean Axmaker

In the low tradition of knockoff horror flicks best seen (or not seen) on a drive-in movie screen, Steven Spielberg’s sequl to Jurassic Park is a poorly conceived, ill-organized film that lacks story and logic. Screenwriter David Koepp strings along a number of loose ideas while Jeff Goldblum returns as Ian Malcolm, the quirky chaos theoretician who now reluctantly agrees to go to another island where cloned dinosaurs are roaming freely. Along with his girlfriend (Julianne Moore) and daughter, Malcolm has to deal with hunters, environmentalists, and corporate swine who stupidly bring back a big dino to Southern California, where it runs amok, of course. Spielberg doesn’t seem to care that the pieces of this project don’t add up to a real movie, so he hams it up with big, scary moments (with none of the artfulness of those in Jurassic Park) and smart-aleck visual gags (a yapping dog in a suburb mysteriously disappears when a hungry T-rex stomps by). Upon its release in 1981, John Irvin’s version of Peter Straub’s bestselling horror novel was deemed one of the worst adaptations that the genre had ever produced. Now it’s available on DVD, and for the first time in widescreen presentation, and not much has changed. It’s still a nearly unwatchable dud. Fred Astaire, John Houseman, Melvyn Douglas, and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. play old friends, members of the self-created Chowder Society, who get together and tell ghost tales. The scariest story of all, however, is the one they never speak to each other. Fifty years ago, the four men accidentally killed a young woman, and now she’s back (with much less meat on her bones) and seeking vengeance. Sound chilling? Well, in Straub’s hands it was, and the novel remains the author’s finest achievement. Irvin, however, distills Staub’s rich characterizations, gradual tension, and creepy atmosphere, and replaces them with aging golden oldies (only Houseman appears to be having any fun) hamming it up and hokey special-effect shots of a rotting corpse. The film moves about as quickly as its ancient cast could during a relay race. The whole thing has arthritis. –Dave McCoy

Independent producer and author John Pierson (Spike, Mike, Slackers and Dykes) defines the 1970s American indie scene as “the three Johns: John Cassavetes, John Sayles, and John Waters.” John Waters, Baltimore’s king of sleaze, in such classy company? According to Pierson in this 1998 documentary, Waters had an even more profound impact on American cinema. Director Steve Yeager, a Waters intimate for decades (he plays a bit part in Pink Flamingos), gathers the surviving members of his stock company for a portrait of the director, from backyard puppet show impresario to the transgressive underground and exploitation director who grossed out America in the 1970s. A generous array of film clips is enriched with archival interviews with Divine, David Lochary, and Edith Massey, and a chorus of film critics and underground and independent directors.

Fully half of the film chronicles the making of Pink Flamingos, with actual behind-the-scenes footage from the shoot (including the most priceless direction ever captured on film: “David, act some more”). A plentiful portion pays tribute to Divine (”the Godzilla of drag qUns”), whom Waters calls “my Elizabeth Taylor.” The only real disappointment in this rich and highly entertaining documentary is that it ends with Flamingos, as if his entire career since is a mere coda to this cultural touchstone. But this portrait is so rich and detailed that it’s a forgivable directorial choice. –Sean Axmaker
