The debates over this film have been raging for years, and now that HELLO, DOLLY! has been released on DVD, they’re likely to continue for years to come. Opinions are certain to vary, but let’s clear up a few misconceptions right from the start -

After 20th Century-Fox purchased the screen rights to HELLO, DOLLY!, producer/screenwriter Ernest Lehman was fairly certain he’d be asking Carol Channing to recreate her stage performance for the film - that is, until he saw her in the 1967 movie THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE; to put it as delicately as possible, her features didn’t translate well to the big screen. Fox executives were equally doubtful about Channing, so the search began for a new Dolly. After flirting with (and subsequently dropping) the idea of Elizabeth Taylor, the leading candidate became Barbra Streisand. The powers-that-be suspected (correctly) she was headed for major film stardom, and they hoped a fresh, younger Dolly would give the multi-million dollar project greater appeal. Lehman immediately revised his script, eliminating all references to Dolly losing her husband fourteen years earlier, and - after concluding that audiences wouldn’t accept Streisand as an Irishwoman - changing the character’s name from Dolly Gallagher Levi to simply Dolly Levi. The studio made the offer, Streisand signed on the dotted line, and Lehman surrounded her with the creme de la creme of the MGM/Arthur Freed movie musical unit - Gene Kelly (director), Roger Edens (associate producer), Michael Kidd (choreographer), Lennie Hayton (musical scoring), and Irene Sharaff (costumes).

Skeptics, however, dug in their heels, and a period of bad press followed; there was outrage a film novice like Streisand had taken a role they considered her ill-suited for. A wave of sympathy engulfed Channing, who received a consolation Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE (even though Beatrice Lillie received the film’s best reviews when it was released).

The bad press began to wane when Streisand’s first film, FUNNY GIRL, was released to critical acclaim, box office success, and a Best Actress Oscar; suddenly there was great anticipation for HELLO, DOLLY! And when the film finally opened in December of 1969, it played to packed (and enthusiastic) houses from New York City to Hollywood. Even critics who questioned Streisand’s appropriateness for the role agreed she put on a hell of a show.

After a solid start, however, the film’s success was mixed; HELLO, DOLLY! received seven Oscar nominations (including one for Best Picture), but Streisand was overlooked. And though it ranked as one of the top ten box office attractions of the year, it hadn’t recouped its production costs by the end of 1970; it was neither the runaway success the studio was hoping for, nor the disastrous flop its critics made it out to be. But to the dismay of naysayers who wanted the film to die an ignoble death, DOLLY kept attracting new fans - first on television, then on video, and later on laser disc. Obviously, somebody had done something right.

Watching the movie now on DVD, it’s hard to believe such a good-natured, visually spectacular film could have provoked the feelings of animosity it did (and apparently still does). As for Streisand, I think Lehman was absolutely right to cast her; there may be times when she seems too hip for this wholesome slice of Americana, but her funky irreverence is what makes HELLO, DOLLY! so much fun. Not only is she in excellent voice throughout - if anything, she sounds better here than she did in FUNNY GIRL - but it’s hard to imagine anyone else bringing the poignance she does to Dolly’s monologue in the park (”Ephraim, let me go”), or being as raucously funny in the dinner sequence at Harmonia Gardens (”You salt your beets, and I’ll salt mine”). In fact, her energy and charisma are so dynamic that the film’s pace falters whenever she’s not around - no disrespect to either Michael Crawford or Marianne McAndrew, but the subplots involving Cornelius Hackl and Irene Molloy, while pleasant enough, are hardly enthralling. Walter Matthau, however, makes a surprisingly effective Horace Vandergelder, and his scenes with Streisand have some genuine comic vitality. If there were offscreen tensions between the two, they weren’t apparent when the cameras were rolling.

But more than anything else, DOLLY on DVD offers great opportunities for those of us who just want to concentrate on musical numbers (we know who we are). There are moments worth savoring again and again in “Just Leave Everything To Me,” “Put On Your Sunday Clothes,” “Dancing” (Danny Lockin and E.J. Peaker are particularly impressive here), “Before The Parade Passes By,” “The Waiter’s Gallop,” and, of course, the title number with Louis Armstrong, but Streisand’s best number is probably her simplest - “So Long, Dearie.” It isn’t hard to understand why her character gets a marriage proposal after that one.

As for the age issue - yeah, it’s a little strange to see a woman in her late twenties being referred to as an “old girl.” So why didn’t Ernest Lehman ask Jerry Herman to alter the lyrics? Hard to say - maybe he didn’t think anyone interested in realism would be watching HELLO, DOLLY! in the first place. And ultimately, that’s what this movie is all about - pure escapism on a grand scale. The quality is apparent in every frame, so just kick back and enjoy the show.

HELLO DOLLY has received a bum rap over the years. Its oversized budget and colossal New York-circa-1890 back lot set is said to have sunk 20th Century Fox. This is far from the truth.

Now, almost 35 years later, DOLLY can be seen in proper perspective: it’s a well-done, old-fashioned movie musical. Its only sin is that is dresses up a flimsy Broadway musical in the form of a big-time movie musical. Let’s face it, HELLO DOLLY’s book features situation-comedy type scenes of hiding in closets and mistaken identities. It doesn’t have the weight of the Nazis (i.e. SOUND OF MUSIC) or the Americana of OKLAHOMA. It is, nevertheless, frothy fun — with a great, hummable score!

Barbra Streisand is also blamed for accepting the role of Dolly Levi, too. Dolly should be middle-aged; Streisand was 27. Also, Carol Channing was famous for the part (she won a Tony for it) and Streisand is considered to have “stolen” the movie from Channing. (I personally could not fathom watching Carol Channing for 2-1/2 hours.) Streisand was too young. But does it really matter? She’s absolutely hilarious in DOLLY, and sings the score wonderfully. It was Streisand’s second film, and one of her too few musical films.

The DVD features a wonderful featurette from 1969. The featurette contains great behind-the-scenes footage of filming the “Before the Parade Passes By” scene, as well as the “Sunday Clothes” scene. Gene Kelly, Michael Kidd, and Irene Sharaff are all included.

Fox has restored HELLO DOLLY and this DVD features the restored print. DOLLY has never looked better! From the multi-colored feathers on the back of her hat in the opening scene, to the canary-yellow “Hello Dolly” dress in the Harmonia Gardens, Streisand looks fabulous and colorful and bold. Throughout the film you will notice various shades of purples pop out. The paint-speckled trees in the “Parade”park scene are an interesting detail! The only scene that misses is the dimly lit “Love is Only Love” song. The colors look faded and the picture quality drops a notch or two.

I must also sing the praises of this WIDESCREEN release! I’ve watched DOLLY for years on a pan-and-scan VHS tape. The movie looks excellent in widescreen - the way it was originally filmed - and it’s great to see some of the action in the extremes of the frame. For instance, this is probably the first time I’ve ever seen what Streisand was doing in the right part of the frame while dueting with Louis Armstrong!

So enjoy HELLO DOLLY. Dolly’ll never go away again.

Standout production about three inseperable Army buddies with big plans who on their last drunken night together after World War II vow to reunite ten years later…and can’t stand each other when they do.

This really is an overlooked diamond which deserves among all others the DVD treatment for its wonderful use of 2:35:1. There is one scene which particularly suffers from the pan and scan - the musical number in which the three pals sing and dance on a tri-split screen (each thinking the same thing about the others - `Once Upon A Time I Had Two Friends…’ is the song). Compositions are great all around, though. Jazzy, upbeat musical numbers and some of the greatest dance steps Gene Kelly ever pulled off (the stellar one on the roller skates `I Like Myself’ which is seen briefly by Jean Reno in THE PROFESSIONAL, and a great set in the beginning where the GI’s tap dance with trash can lids on their feet are particularly amazing). Cyd Charrise kicks it up with a gym full of pugs in `Baby, You Knock Me Out’ and Dolores Grey for my money gives the best performance in the awesome `Thanks A Lot But No Thanks,’ alternately dynamiting and gunning down her suitors…it cracks me up every time.

And the story is smart and sweet too, touching on the endurance of real friendship, the benefit of hindsight, and the healing effects of true love. Granted, like a good horse it tends to sag a little in the middle, but it comes back kicking in the end. This one is a real classic. I love it too much to give it less than four stars, but it loses one for the pan and scan.

Besides Singin’ in the Rain and 7 Brides for 7 Brothers (which always get good reviews), this is a forgotten gem. I like the movie because there is some cynicism in the characters that make their transformations that much more memorable. If you don’t know the basic story line, it’s about 3 guys who were the BEST of friends as war buddies, decide to meet years later, and have realized that through the passage of time…now they HATE each other. Of course, it’s an MGM musical, so you should know how the ending turns out.
Gene Kelly proves again that he’s not only a great dancer, but a great actor, although I do believe like the other reviews that Dan Dailey does the best acting job. Michael Kidd does a good job being the simplest of the three. And don’t forget the ladies, especially Cyd Charisse–I don’t think she ever does anything wrong.
2 musical sequences stand out– one is when the 3 main characters are in 3 different locations and start singing a song and the dance choreography is the same for all of them–you see 3 different screens (so they are obviously in 3 different settings) which I think was unique in the 1950’s. Just an amazing sequence that makes you realize why movies are great. And the 2nd is the Gene Kelly roller skating sequence, which I feel has a bigger emotional lift considering the circumstances in the movie than his “singin’ in the rain” bit of the movie of the same title. The movie’s not as good as “singin’ in the rain” , but if you’re looking for some great musicals that they don’t make anymore, I think you’ll enjoy the flick.

If you are pretty familiar with the applications of makeup, then this may not be for you. It goes over the basics which I already familiar with. They could have also done a better job blending the makeup on a couple of the models (even though the models applied the makeup themselves). However, there are not many African-American how-to-apply makeup DVD’s on the market so I am glad to add this to my collection.

I bought this DVD for my daughters and they loved it. Their skin looks better and they wear makeup like a lady should. My husband who never says anything made a comment on how well the girls look. It may not be for the glamous movie star type that may have a professional do their face anyway, but it’s perfect for learning how to care for your skin and look your best at work and out for the evening.

There is such a sense of childlike wonder and fun in Henry Hathaway’s 1954 Camelot tale, PRINCE VALIANT, that it’s easy to forgive the obvious incongruities in accents (Robert Wagner’s broad American tones…hard to believe he plays Donald Crisp’s son…Sterling Hayden, looking and sounding more like Wild Bill Hickok than Sir Gawain…Victor McLaglen as the most Irish Viking you’ll ever see!), and concentrate, instead, on the energy, pageantry, and sweep of Hathaway’s adaptation of Hal Foster’s classic comic strip.

Certainly, one would be hard-pressed to assemble a finer cast; in addition to Wagner, Hayden, McLaglen, and Crisp, you have James Mason as the villain, Sir Brack, dazzling, and far more believable than he had been as Rupert of Hentzau in MGM’s remake of THE PRISONER OF ZENDA; Janet Leigh and Debra Paget, both ethereally beautiful as the sisters, Aleta and Ilene; and Brian Aherne, as King Arthur, so perfect in the role that you wish his part had been larger.

In the early 1950s, there was a resurgence of swashbuckling films in Hollywood, and a new sub-category appeared, ‘Knights in Training’, with Fox’s PRINCE VALIANT, and Universal’s THE BLACK SHIELD OF FALWORTH (starring Tony Curtis) both devoting ample screen time to the education of squires in the knightly skills of jousting and sword fighting. These scenes are great fun to watch, particularly for children (knights had to go to school, too!), and paint a far more accurate picture of the difficult work involved in mastering the required talents than did the recent film, A KNIGHT’s TALE.

As we follow the adventures of the Viking Prince as he restores his kingdom, finds love, and wins a place at the Round Table, special credit must be given to Franz Waxman’s spectacular music. One of the most memorable scores ever produced for a film, the theme has become a staple at the Hollywood Bowl, and for the Boston Pops. Once heard, it is not forgotten!

While the magical elements of the story are downplayed (the mystical powers of the ‘Singing Sword’ are more implied than actually shown), the story itself has such a sense of wonder that it isn’t missed. The heroes of Camelot are all present (Arthur, Lancelot, Guinevere, Gawain, and Galahad), and the Round Table scenes are as majestic as any film has ever accomplished.

PRINCE VALIANT may not be in a league with EXCALIBUR, but it certainly holds it’s own against KNIGHTS OF THE ROUND TABLE, CAMELOT, and FIRST KNIGHT, and as a family film it can’t be beat!

Released in 1954, “Prince Valiant” is as much fun for the whole family now as it was fifty years ago. This colourful, Cinemascope movie is a feast for the eye, and thoroughly entertaining from start to finish. You have a brave young hero to cheer for–a nasty villain to “hiss”–action–romance–beautiful sets, locations, costumes–and Henry Hathaway’s expert direction.

A very young Robert Wagner stars as “Prince Valiant”, a Viking who wishes to become a knight in the court of King Arthur–he certainly cuts a dashing figure, once you get used to a rather outlandish, but compulsory, Prince Valiant wig ! Valiant soon finds himself involved in a treacherous plan to oust his own father, King Aguar ( laid-back, avuncular Donald Crisp ), and–zounds !–King Arthur himself ( laid-back, avuncular Brian Aherne ). Of course, our hero still finds time to fall in love with Princess Aleta ( gorgeous Janet Leigh )–not enough romance ?–well, Aleta’s handmaiden, Ilene ( sultry Debra Paget ) is “smitten” with Valiant’s mentor, Sir Gawain ( a bluff and hearty Sterling Hayden ). Stirring up the whole pot is the ambitious, unscrupulous Sir Brack ( James Mason, stealing scenes with ease ). We have a very lively jousting scene, plenty of battles, narrow escapes and other feats of “derring do”. There is, in fact, never a dull moment ! There are more than a few “camp” aspects to this movie, not the least of which are those strong American accents of Mr.Wagner and, especially, Mr.Hayden. Remember “The Black Shield of Falworth” when Tony Curtis, in heavy Bronx accent, says ” take me to da castle of my fadda ” ? There are a few smiles like that here.

The DVD is beautiful–you will be hard pressed to find many films more colourful than this lovely Cinemascope gem from Fox. Extras are sparse–a few trailers and a brief promotional clip from the fifties. Some comments from Robert Wagner would have been fun–fifty years later, and he still looks great–I wonder what he eats for breakfast ? !

While it may not be in the same class as “The Adventures of Robin Hood”, “Prince Valiant” remains a fine example of Hollywood swashbuckling hokum that will not wear out its welcome with repeated viewings. Recommended.

A Goofy Movie is one of my top 5 Disney animated movies of all time. Hands down. It’s almost never mentioned by uppity film critics, a lot of people that like Disney usually forget it, and it isn’t exactly a masterpiece like Snow White, but it definately holds its own. I watched it back when it came out, and I loved it. Remembering this, I saw it sitting on a shelf at the store and decided to give it another shot to see if it stood the test of time and my being 20 now. It did. If anything, it only got better. Before The Incredibles, there was another Disney film that brought families close together. And that, was A Goofy Movie, believe it or not. Go ahead and laugh, because I wouldn’t believe it if someone told me that too. Goofy, bringing families closer together? Blasphemy! But it’s not. Goofy is a great character for this kind of movie about a teenager growing distant from his dad. While it’s a good one for families, it’s even better if you’re a single dad with a son. While I’m a month late in saying this, it’s also a very good Father’s Day movie if you two can sit back and enjoy “just” a cartoon.

Buy,Download, Or Stream A Goofy Movie! Click Here

We start out with Max, Goofy’s son. He’s dreaming about a girl he has a crush on, Roxanne. It’s ruined before they kiss, when he starts to turn into his dad. Huge teeth, feet, hands, ears, everything. He wakes up, and panics once more- he’s overslept and he’s almost late for a little surprise at school. His dad busts in and embarasses him already, showing up with a towel wrapped around his body and one on his head too while Max is getting dressed. Not a good start for the last day of school. Max makes it and gets together with PJ and Bobby (a new character voiced by Pauly Shore. He acts just like him too). They throw together a huge stage performance where Max imitates Powerline, a pop star in the Goof world, and everyone in the school goes nuts. It comes to a halt when the principal interrupts, and the three friends get into big trouble. Unfortunately, he calls each of their parents at a bad time- Pete (PJ’s dad) is giving Goofy a speech about how Max could join a gang or get into even worse trouble if Goofy doesn’t start being a little harder on him. Goofy takes the call from the principal as a little wake up call, and makes plans to go on a trip to a fishing spot he and his dad went on ages ago. Well, Max had impressed Roxanne with that onstage risk, and they were going to go to an after-grad party together. The trip gets in the way, and he lies to her, saying he’s going to see Powerline live since he knows him. Goofy and Max hit the road to what Goofy thinks is a fun fishing trip and time to bond with his son, but it’s anything but. The two argue, stop talking to eachother for a period of time, get into huge danger in the woods and in a river, and more. I’m sure every parent with a teenager can relate to most of what goes on here.

Now, even just barely out of my teenage years, this movie really hits me. How Max treats his dad from time to time made me resent him, but also made me realize that we’ve all done something like that. Leaving in the middle of what’s supposed to be a fun place because you think it’s dumb…you can see the pain on Goofy’s face when Max does this. And what makes it hurt the viewer is that it’s Goofy- a character who’s always upbeat and happy. Watching him get sad actually made me tear up. What’s worse is when he and Max run into a mishap involving a waterfall. Eventhough I know how it’s going to end, I wanted Goofy to be alright. See? This is just an animated character. But you get attatched to him after all he goes through. But now I’m making the movie sound depressing. Aside from a few moments like the ones I’ve mentioned, the movie’s funny overall, and kids age 11+ will be sure to get a few laughs out of it. Bigfoot discovering disco music has to be one of these things.

Buy,Download, Or Stream A Goofy Movie! Click Here

The visual quality didn’t get the best treatment here, but I’m hoping a Platinum Edition is in the works somewhere down the line. There’s notable grain and smudges one the print, and it looks like a slightly cleaned up vhs version. But the movie was made in the mid-late 90’s, so it still looks pretty good animation-wise. No jagged lines here. And the audio’s nice and loud. The Powerline songs at the beginning and end are booming all over the place. Some sound effects are a tad quiet, like Goofy and Max stay at the underwater-themed hotel, but it’s nothing you’ll mind unless you’re listening for things like this.

Here’s the reason it gets four stars instead of five. While I was surprised when I went to the special features menu, and discovered some that were actually good, there weren’t enough. I remember seeing some concept designs for Big Foot and a few other characters way back when, and it would’ve been nice to have had them here in some sort of gallery. Also, it would’ve been nice if Disney had given it as equally great extras as some other Gold Classic Classic discs. But what’s here’s still good. The first one I have to mention is an entire episode of the classic Disney Afternoon cartoon: Goof Troop. It’s the “Calling All Goofs” episode in which a few of Goofy’s relatives are having a reunion. Because Pete screws up Goofy’s car, he can’t go. So instead, Peg (Pete’s sultry wife) has the reunion at their house. Of course, we all know how Pete is around Goofy. How will he handle more than one at the same time? It’s pure chaos. Unfortunately, the transfer to dvd wasn’t kind to the episode, and there are a lot of visual problems here and there (some images jump around instead of smoothly moving. Keep focused on a character when they’re doing something, and you’ll notice it). It’s a funny episode still, and I was surprised to be laughing at it well over ten years after it first aired. It was nice seeing the whole crew, sans Chainsaw. Next, is the biggest extra of the batch- A Goofy Success Story, running over 40 minutes. It covers how Goofy became a household name. It goes well into his past, and is a must-see for classic Disney fans and animation fans in general. After this is the embarassing A Goofy Movie dvd Storybook. If you remember those books on tape…with books included of Disney movies from the 90’s, that’s what this is…only you watch it. There’s the option of having it read to you, in which the narrator sounds like he’s talking to kids with ADD. This is actually worth a laugh, if only for what pictures they chose for each page. The first 3 had me holding my sides (go ahead an’ say I’m immature. I don’t care). What’s almost as bad is the Disney Mambo No. 5 by Lou Bega. It’s Mambo No. 5…but with some changes for a family audience and a Disney theme. What’s somewhat sick is that he goes over pairings for characters. Like Mickey = Minnie, Donald = Daisy. But then he gets to Pluto, who in turn gets Huey, Louie and Dewy. Horrid. There’s also a lame trivia game and the usual trailer to round things out.

That’s all there is to it. Get A Goofy Movie. Don’t even rent it, just buy it. We’re never going to get another one like this. Not from Disney anyway at the rate they’re going.

I watched “A Goofy Movie” tonight when I was babysitting. The kids loved it and I enjoyed it too. This movie contains enough of the little things to be appealing to children of all ages…including teens…like me. I don’t think I’ve seen a better Disney movie. This one has to be my faveorite. The music was good for people of all ages and I have been searching the internet for the soundtrack. It’s not every day that you see a teenager rave about PG movie. Excellent Job Disney!

This is a wonderful DVD from the folks who restored it in the 1990s. An excellent-transfer, great sound, and some wonderful goodies! Originally-released in a limited-run in 1998, it is available again for the true Bava-cultists (like me). You cannot go-wrong with this DVD, the reconstruction is spot-on. The score is one of the best in Italian-cinema, and it makes “Last House on the Left” seem a little-tame. Mario Bava shows us why he made all of his other horrors–life in Italy during his film-run (50s-70s) was rife with political and criminal-violence. Enjoy! This is the real-deal.

I’ll admit that I’ve never seen films by Mario Bava. I’ve only recently gotten into Italian Cinema with the films of Dario Argento and other Giallo taken up my interest. Until now I had never tried any Bava. So hearing of this film and being intrigued with the premise I picked up the DVD.

The premise of the film is four criminals rob a pharmaceutical companies payroll during which the getaway driver is killed. The three remaining killers flee to a parking lot taking hostages, one of which they kill in order to escape. Afterwards in order not to be spotted by police in a familiar car they pull off and take more hostages this time a middle aged man and a sick child. At this point the films been a violent crime film. When it gets in the car the film is basically centered on the drive of the criminals and their hostages. Whats good in the film despite minor flaws is that even in its form (neither Rabid Dogs or the re-edited Kidnapped was completed with Bava’s support due to circumstances which earned its “lost” status until recently) its a really well assembled suspense thriller building its tension slowly. As tensions in the car rise and victims plead for their lives even the criminals begin to turn against each other. One wants to rape the woman hostage, while another goes along with what ever happens while the leader is more concerned with just getting to their destination. There are moments in the film that to me were great in a transgressive way that newer films couldn’t even come close to topping. And in the end, I don’t want to ruin it but if you get into the plot as much I did it will definitely suprise you. I was totally blown away by the film. One thing also is the feeling of anger that seeps from every frame. This is a brutal film to watch at times with its portrayl of a world that is vain arrogant and rather brutal in considering the plight of the hostages (especially the child). To me its a film that in tone could almost compare to one of my favorites, Kurosawa’s Ran.

Unfortunately I’ve only viewed the Rabid Dogs cut on the new Anchor Bay disc. It also contains Lamberto Bava’s edit Kidnapped more in line with his fathers intentions which I will watch in the future but was turned off for the synthesizer score (I just love the harpsichord and organs blaring in Rabid Dogs even though admittedly the score is incesant) and didn’t want to watch the film so soon after seeing it. Still this a definite recommend from me, worth viewing.

I have seen many anime’s (and own a lot as well) and I must say that this one definately suprised me. I thought it had great animation (definately theater quality) As for the dubbing, you got some big names doing the voices. I feel that kiefer sutherland did great at doing his part. As for elizabeth berkley, it took me a while to get use to it, but while the story unfold’s, you realize how great her voice fits the role as well. Not to mention, this movie has great re-viewing properties, I was more than happy to watch this movie twice in a row (which I did!) Not to mention, it can get a little confusing, but the plot by the end is easy to understand, and the movie stays in your mind. It’s hard to compare, but it’s easy to prove that’s it’s good. You should for sure buy this if you are a anime fan. If your trying out the genre, this is a great start to your collection along with akira and ghost in the shell. Also, there definately is violence, but when the rating says “brief nudity” they mean it, there really wasn’t much nudity at all, maybe 1 or 2 scenes that I can remember, which lasted for a few seconds. Not to many extra feature’s, but the menu screen is put together very well. This movie is all around good, I don’t know if the best, but definately on the top row of my collection!

The first time I had seen this movie I enjoyed it. But it wasn’t until I’d seen it for the second time that it struck me what a wonderful movie Armitage 3 is. The animation is superb. Berkley and Sutherland were absolutely perfect for the voices. the plost comes across confusing at first, but it all comes together quite nicely by the end.The characters are well written and you find yourself empathising with the heroes, so that by the end you are right in the movie. Great for a first time anime expierience. (The soundtrack to this film is something I’d love to get my hands on. It pumps the movie along quite nicely. You’ll sit down and watch the credits just to listen to the ending theme!)

I grew up watching the Flipper TV series and it was always one of my favorites, so I couldn’t wait to see the original movie that’s humbly called “Flipper.” It shows how Flipper earned his name and how he met his best friend named Sandy.

I liked this movie, but I don’t like it as much as I like “Flipper’s New Adventure.” You won’t see Flipper make any rescues this first time around, and he doesn’t have the same ‘voice’ as he has in the series, but you will see the smart dolphin do plenty of tricks and show that he had a huge brain even in his first outing.

If you’ve ever liked the TV series or even if you haven’t ever seen it, but you like dolphins or just good movies, I recommend getting “Flipper.” It’d probably be especially good for kids of any age to watch, and possibly a good family movie. To make it short, it’d be a good buy.

The original Flipper movie is simple, and unpretentious tale that tickles the heartstrings. The story line is uncomplicated, with touches that keep it grounded in reality.

Chuck Connors, best known for playing Lucas McCain on “The Rifleman” TV program, is once again cast as a strong father figure. Here he is Porter Ricks, a fisherman trying to eek out a living, and support his wife (Kathleen Maguire) and young son Sandy (Luke Halpin). Life is very hard, as after surviving a hurricane, Porter must leave his family to repair his boat damaged in the storm.

While his father is away, Sandy is exploring the sea with some friends. A dolphin (Flipper), is shot with a spear by another boy in the party. The shooter is himself injured, and is taken away for medical attention. Sandy returns to the scene, with shotgun in hand, prepared to put the injured dolphin out of it’s misery. Of course that can’t happen, and Sandy brings the injured dolphin home.

Flipper’s recovery is a most miraculous one, but the real story deals with the relationship between father and son, and the growth of the young man. Sandy is a good kid, but not syrupy sweet. Ricks loves his son, but is determined to have him face the realities of life. Thanks to Flipper, both father and son learn some valuable lessons in life.

The story of Flipper’s origin, has a more serious tone than the TV program. Though it doesn’t have a lot of warm and fuzzy moments, it is still fairly good family entertainment.

In episode 5 on the Hanaukyo Maid Team, Vol. 2: Lost in Kamakura DVD, Mariel cosplaying, or dressing up in costume, as Chii (Chi) from Chobits is an inside joke regarding Rie Tanaka, the Japanese voice actor (seiyuu) who voices both Mariel in Hanaukyo Maid Team and Chii in Chobits. Rie Tanaka shows off her range and versatility by playing some of the nicest, sweetest, gentlest, kindest characters in animation (Mariel, Chii, Lacus Clyne in Gundam Seed & Gundam Seed Destiny, Ren Mikihara in Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu, Hikari Kujou / Shiny Luminous in Futari wa Pretty Cure Max Heart, etc.) to some of the meanest, nastiest, angriest, bitchiest characters in animation (Suigintou in Rozen Maiden & Rozen Maiden Traumend, Tomoe Marguerite in Mai-Otome / My-Otome, Morganna in .hack//SIGN, Hiroko Matsukata in Hataraki Man / Hatarakiman, Isabella in Soukou no Strain, etc.), and by playing lead heroines to arch villains.

The merits of this film are obvious enough to simply summarize: it is the one and only original shoestring budget classic. No, the plot isn’t original, but that hasn’t stopped others from picking it up and running with it, sometimes in different directions, and sometimes even more successfully (see “Jacob’s Ladder” for a deeper, and darker, take). But I doubt that ANYone ANYwhere has made a better film for less money; as someone below wrote, “”Blair Witch”, eat your heart out.”

And then to have it released on a Criterion DVD, well, it just doesn’t get any better than that! OK, we may not need TWO versions, …. And the second DVD isn’t just a filler: you get anything and everything you could think of associated with the movie, including “now and then” visits to the film sites, a great hour-long tribute, a history of the film company, stills, probably more than all but the most compulsive fan would want but you won’t feel as though you’ve gotten short-changed! As always, the real reason we love Criterion is the quality of their prints - they are simply THE BEST you are going to see. Anyone who has seen this film on one of its numerous cheapie incarnations on VHS will be ecstatic with this version - you won’t believe how superior the picture quality is.

I have to say “get this now, before it’s discontinued”. This edition can NOT be bettered; you will NEVER EVER see a better version of this classic sleeper.

Now, Criterion, when are you going to release Robert Wise’s “The Haunting”, hmmmm?

Carnival of Souls is an old B-film that you might have seen on old Saturday night horror shows. As Herk Harvey (the director) said, this film was shot on a budget that wouldn’t have sustained the opening moments of Back To The Future. However, this film is able to sustain a creepy and oppressive atmosphere throughout, and that is the major achievement. Even though I knew when every “scary” moment was coming, and I guessed the ending 20 minutes before the film actually ended, that knowledge didn’t ruin it for me. That’s how strong the movie is, that you can enjoy the film even if you knew everything about it. The acting is stiff and the dialogue is often stilted, but that just adds to the strange and dark atmosphere of the film. And the Criterion release is a real gem. Two discs, the first has the theatrical release of the film, and the second has the director’s cut. The film looks incredible. I’ve yet to see such an old and cheaply made movie look so good. And the extras are also great. Documentaries, outtakes, interviews, and oh, that organ music. If you’re a fan of horror, you must own this film. If you’re a film buff, you must own it. If you’re a DVD afficionado, you must own it. If you’re just looking for a good movie to watch on a Saturday night, then please, choose this one. It delivers.
