Customer Reviews:

Fantastic Deal!!!5
I ordered the Map Library along with my PN-40 unit. This map library was one of the deal-makers that led to my buying the DeLorme GPSr. I mainly use the aerial images and the 1:24k topo quads. The color images for my area look to have been taken a couple of years ago, while the b&w’s look about 6-7 years old. This will vary by geographic area. You can layer the maps in any order, and view hybrids with the Topo 7 data over the aerial (or whichever view you choose).

This annual subscription is just an unbelievable deal. The downloads I’ve made already would cost hundreds (going on thousands) of dollars if I bought the maps individually.

The best value in mapping software, bar none!5
I have used DeLorme TopoUSA products for going on a decade now, so I have lots of experience with it from it’s earlier days as a pioneering product in the consumer digital mapping field. Once I “got the hang of it”, it’s been an indispensable tool in the backcountry. Hook a GPS to the laptop, load up the DeLorme mapping software, and you get a dot on the map at the precise location you are at. During my backcountry adventures, I’ve found jeep trails using DeLorme mapping software that I couldn’t even see on the ground due to terrain conditions, nighttime, etc. The added benefit of handheld mapping GPS units from DeLorme has only made their mapping products even more useful. Maps downloaded through this subscription can also be downloaded into DeLorme’s handheld gps units.

This subscription to the DeLorme download service for added 7.5 minute USGA topo maps, charts, aerial, and satellite photography has been a wonderful addition to the product. I’ve been using it since around March, 2009. I have two different laptops, a Gateway that’s probably three years old, and an Acer that is going on two years old. Neither model is considered “top of the line” as far as speed goes. However, I’ve never had a problem downloading any maps into DeLorme 7.0 on either computer. The download speeds have been great through our DSL service and wireless home network. While I agree with some other reviewers that it would be nice to be able to download larger single files, I have never had a problem merely creating more files and downloading them back to back, which is done automatically once the maps are selected. I merely choose the maps, aerial, or satellite photography I want, let the software create the files, submit the order three or four files at a time, and often the first maps are ready to download before I’m done choosing the last maps for my map download session. After that, it’s all automatic. I have not experienced, on either of my computers, the types of problems others have had, so I can only suggest that the cause of their difficulties might be more due to their particular network issues rather than problems with the software itself. What’s more, I’ve learned that one can also copy map files from one computer to another, thus I only need to download the maps one time to one computer, then I can transfer them easily to the other computer as well. Additionally, when one of my computers “crashed” and needed to be restored, I had to have the keycode reactivated on that computer through DeLorme’s customer service line, which was handled by DeLorme’s UNITED STATES BASED SUPPORT PEOPLE in mere minutes.

Since I also own mapping products from both Garmin and National Geographic, and Wildflower before them, I can attest to the fact that all of them have a proprietary user interfaces which require some getting used to. None of them can be considered “standard”. There are a few features in each of the other products I like, some individual features even better than DeLorme. However, I always seem to come back to DeLorme for overall ease of use, available features in one package, and for the value received for my dollar spent in added maps and photography. I can attest to the fact that if one were to purchase from other vendors the volume of maps and photography equal to what is available for around $30 a year through the DeLorme subscription, one would indeed pay many hundreds, if not well over a thousand dollars.

When one also includes the potential for updated maps and photography through the DeLorme download service over time, it makes this subscription an incredible value that I have not been able to even come close to duplicating anywhere, and believe me, I look for the best deals I can find.

I have not been in the least bit disappointed, and I will most definitely renew this subscription.

is not what it pretends to be2
A great idea: unlimited download of USGS Topo Qads, NOAA nautical charts, aerial imagery. And everything will be visible on the computer screen as well as on the handheld GPS unit. The problem is: Delorme makes every effort to prevent the valued customer from downloading their precious data. The selection process of maps to download is slow and tedious through their “flagship” software “TopUSA 8″. Once after dozends of clicks the maximum download size of about 50 MB is selected (corresponding to a 1000sqm area), one has to wait 20 minutes for an email with a download link to arrive. The download itself is painstakingly slow and crashes half of the time (this does not have to do with my connection speed). So be prepared to spend days and days clicking through menues and waiting and frustrating if you want to get some of your money’s worth on this product…

No need for Windows or Internet Explorer, it’s a Network Camera4
The BL-C1A is listed as “requiring” both Windows and Internet Explorer. After a bit of experimenting, it seems it doesn’t, and is perfectly usable with Ubuntu (or indeed any OS) and Firefox. No need for Windows at all.

So, for anybody else who wants to use the BL-C1A camera with something other than Windows here’s how.

First, ignore the shiny Windows CDROM in the box. Plug the camera into your router with your own network cable (they don’t supply one!) and plug in the power supply. Wait a minute. If your router is 192.168.0.1, the camera should default to 192.168.0.253 (or 192.168.1.253 for a 192.168.1.1 router, etc).

From Firefox on the local network just go to the IP addess of the camera (as above) followed by ?mode=local and you should get the camera’s built in web server. (The mode=local is essential, to activate it). Create an admin userid/password, hit enter. That’s it.

Configuring the cameras for static addresses, different ports etc is all done via the web interface after that point, so still doesn’t need Windows or IE in any way.

With a few lines written in the manual they could drop the Windows/IE requirement.

Camera works very nicely, and so does emailing, and the viewnetcam dynamic dns service (after a bit of a battle with router settings). One warning: you can’t test the viewnetcam service from the same network that the camera is on, so before you think it’s not working try it from elsewhere!

Camera does the job fine for the price, one point deducted for not having any non-Windows installation instructions.

Impressive for the price4
I was impressed with the quality of this camera for the price. I am currently using it as a remote baby monitor. It was cheaper than the video monitors they sell for babies, and it’s more versatile once I”m done using it for that purpose. The best part of it is the back end functionality, but overall it’s a nice camera. Some points:

1. Triggers - you can set the camera up to send photos via email or FTP whenever motion is sensed, or at a regular interval. I’m saving photos on my web server whenever the baby moves (with 10 minutes between each snapshot), and then I have a job that creates a time-lapse movie at the end of each day. Useful? Not really, but pretty cool regardless.

2. Web Server - The web server is solid, includes authentication, and is easy to configure for inexperienced users.

3. Image quality - The image quality during the day is surprisingly good - but remember, this isn’t a large lens camera, it’s a webcam. Don’t expect your 640×480 images to look like they were taken with your digital camera. Instead, think camera phone but slightly better. Certainly good enough. Motion video is impressive. I don’t know how it looks from a bandwidth perspective, but I’m guessing the wireless version of this camera would be comparable. “Color Night Vision” is a joke, though. It does adjust surprisingly well in low-light conditions, but overall you need light. If you have a very dim room, the image is literally black.

Again, overall I’m impressed with the camera and feel it’s a good value.

Good Camera ..bad manual3
Bought this camera and got it installed in no time. Camera images are clean, and low light images are very good. That surprised me giving the price. It’s totally configurable by web browser, and I’ve adjusted settings and viewed images via explorer 7 and fire fox.

The issues I have with this camera is its documentation and remote access over the net. Documentation is weak and if you run into config problems……you’re dead. Unless you are versed in network configuration etc. I thought I was until I came across this camera….boy that took awhile. Accessing it over the internet requires configuring my router to allow port forwarding etc.

As for getting emails..?….I’ve yet to get one with images. The only emails I obtain is its reports of how many pix it takes everyday. I really wish that I have better support somewhere for this side and I would be fine.

But again, over the local lan…its great.

Nice machine for personal or small home office use.5
We’ve used this for about 2 months now and have been very satisfied. It was very easy to set up and we have had no problems with it. We have it set up with a “distinctive ring” feature so we can have both a voice number and a fax number on the same physical phone line. It has had no problem handling this and it has always been able to tell a fax call from a voice one. We also have an answering machine, PC Modem, cordless phone, and credit card terminal all hooked up to the same physical line as this fax machine and have no conflicts or problems. The footprint is very small which is nice if you’re running out of deskspace.

The print quality is OK. We use to have an inkjet based fax machine and it was better.

When your comparing prices on these machines, be sure to add the cost of a replacement cartridge to the purchase price of this one (…)The cartridge that comes with it is only good for about 20-30 pages. I get that much junk fax in a couple of weeks. If you decide to buy this one, get a spare cartridge also.

We use this in a home office set up and only get a few of faxes a day. If you have high volume fax needs, this may not be the machine for you. It’s slow and I’m not convinced that it would hold up very long under high-volume situations.

Virtually goof proof personal fax and copier4
What an improvement over our old oily-rolled-paper machine! I hated having cut those things apart and stand on them after they came in to straighten them out! You gotta love modern technology!

I got this durable, handy-dandy, inexpensive unit about a year ago. Overall, I am very happy with it. Easy to set up and operate, it is attractive and fits very well in my small home office. Forgot to re-load paper before going out on errands and someone tried to Fax you a major order? No problem! It has up to 20 pages of memory. My only quibble is that, with lengthy out-going faxes, it must be “baby-sat” as it has only a 10 page outgoing tray. But how often do you have to send off a treatise?

Good but not great4
I use this machine for light home office use and its worked well so far. Print quality is good but not great and the speed is OK, but its definitely not fast. Has a small footprint so it doesn’t take up much space. Set up was easy and the owners manual is relatively straightforward.

Buy a spare cartridge immediately though as it only comes with a 30 page one. It works with my answering machine, which I was concerned about - although it does play the message on my answering machine before receiving the fax so some folks have hung up and tried again thinking it was the wrong number.

For the money, its about the best you can do - HP has more advanced (and expensive models - start at around $200) but nothing else on the market that I was able to find had these features at this price (25 page memory, large paper input, phone).

Customer Reviews:

A little disappointed. Here’s why3
I have always had high regard for Sony’s products. They design always used to be very thoughtful with attention to the slightest details. However, I’m quite disappointed with this product as well as the Sony bluetooth headphones that pairs with this. Most of them may seem like trivial issues, but in the long frequent run, they turn out to be really annoying, especially after you pay for a premium product.

The few good things first. The sound quality is flawless, when in range. There’s no noise or hissing and every note is clear. The device itself is really easy to use and I have no qualms about that; simply turn it on and use it. Battery life is alright, but I don’t think you can replace the battery. (Not sure about that one yet.)

The things that annoy me are the following. Maybe you are like me too?
#1. You can’t use the device while its connected to the charging dock. You can’t use it while it’s charging either. Maybe it’s not intended to be used as a desktop device. But unfortunately, that’s what I bought it to be used as. So you have to charge it and remove out of the dock.. (leave it hanging or something) every time you want to use it.. really annoying if you are using it on a regular basis. I can’t see how they can overlook such an issue.

#2. Range is limited, when compared to other transmitters in the market.

#3. The power plug/transformer/adapter’s design can’t be worse. The plug is so wide, when plugged in, you can’t plug anything next to it. This may seem like a silly issue, but it can become so annoying, esp. when you have a zillion other things plugged into your outlet box, like mine. How can Sony design something so horrible? They could have made the plug stand vertical like the zillion other plugs out there are. At the least, they could have made the plug retractable. Huh.

#4. The audio latency seems to be slightly longer than when connected through other transmitters, which is really strange. I know bluetooth protocol has the inherent latency issues. But it’s worse with this device.

#5. The coiled wire is such a nuisance…. well, atleast they seem to have fixed it with the newer models.

Sony Bluetooth Transmitter4
This product works very well. The only reason I did not give it five stars is the clip on back that holds it in place does not have very much gripping strength. Also, sure wish Sony would have provided a standard-size port for charging. (maybe mini-USB?) If something happens to the charging base, you’re hosed! Having said that, the transmitter is very easy to pair, and the coiled cable allows you locate it wherever you need to. I got this to use with my 2nd gen iPod touch and I consider it an invaluable accessory.

O.K., but needs tweaking.3
This unit transmits good quality audio. The cable will be a plus for some, a negative for others. It paired easily with my Motorola HT820 headphones. There are some infrequent dropouts. The charging base seems unnecessary and bulkey. The range is about half of what is stated without interfering obstacles.
