I have never been a large fan of Ashton Kutcher’s since most of his role consist of him being the annoying bumbling fool such as his role in FOX’s ‘That ’70s Show’ and films such as ‘Dude Where’s My Car’ and ‘Just Married’. The only film of his that I liked was his performance in ‘The Butterfly Effect’. So when this film was first announced I never gave it a second belief until I saw the trailer. The trailer looked wonderful and even though Kutcher was in it, it also starred the fair and talented Amanda Peet who I have loved since her role on the short lived WB series ‘Jack & Jill’. I finally saw this film on DVD and I was pleasantly surprised at how capable this film was. Not only did Amanda Peet give an valid performance but Ashton Hutcher also did a valid job as well. Even though it was a comedy there are other aspects to the film including romance and hints of drama. It is a extraordinary film that I absorb both men and women alike will net very provocative and romantic. Over the coming years I glimpse this film becoming a very accepted date film.
A lot like Fancy is a epic many people can report to: From chance encounters with people to seeing someone now and again to the dreaded “I’m engaged” reply, this note takes you on a whirlwind of twists and turns.

This is about 2 young people who meet on an airplane, and inaugurate an off and on relationship of sorts over the course of 7 years. They exclaim their destiny at times, but eventually fate will have it’s device.
Kutcher and Peete are spacious in their roles. We sight Peete again in a similiar role like she had in “Saving Silverman” where she is able to act like she doesn’t want to give someone the time of day and is very standoff-ish. The two continue to try and meet up at different times but their interest levels at those times do not always conincide so they never seem to come by together for the long haul. There is some progressive scenes showing how they affect one another throughout the course of seven years…one being kucher starting out as an avid photographer and later leaving his camera with her, only for her to recall it up and continue on with the hobby, eventually having a studio out of it.

The beginning is humorous, the ending sweet and predictable, and everything in between is, as I said, some path’s that we can all record to when it comes to dating. I loved the movie and strongly recommend it for a rainy sunday afternoon at home…

Jazz fans who treasure Diana Krall’s Live in Paris DVD can consider Jane Monheit: Live at the Rainbow Room the second half of a luscious double bill. Like Krall, Monheit is a singer whose ease with jazz standards belies her years (a mere 24, in Monheit’s case), and both women are backed by a combo and an orchestra conducted by Alan Broadbent. Monheit doesn’t play the piano like Krall, but her voice is a brighter, more supple instrument. Filmed in September 2002 shortly after the release of her In the Sun album, Monheit’s visit to Manhattan’s legendary cabaret venu mixes classic ballads (”It Never Entered My Mind,” “Some Other Time”) with Brazilian pop (Ivan Lins, Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Waters of March”) and contemporary tunes. The Max Sand backstory in Harold Robbins’s trashy The Carpetbaggers (an enjoyable wallow onscreen in 1964) made for a solid Western vehicle for Steve McQUn at his peak. Nevada Smith is a revenge movie, but closer in spirit to The Bravados than a Death Wish-style exercise in nihilism. Young Max, offspring of a white father and Indian mother, sets out to avenge their slaughter by three villains. His odyssey includes spiritual re-parenting at several stages, most notably by canny gun dealer Jonas Cord (a swell character part for Brian Keith). The supporting cast will have you saying, “He’s in it, too!” at regular intervals (from costars Karl Malden and Arthur Kennedy down to such incidental interlopers as L.Q. Jones and Strother Martin). Since director Henry Hathaway and cameraman Lucien Ballard couldn’t frame a bad shot if their lives depended on it, it’s a relief that this movie is finally available in a widescreen format. –Richard T. Director Richard Lester (A Hard Day’s Night) took over the franchise with this first sequl in the series, though the film doesn’t look much like his usual stylish work. (Superman III is far more Lesteresqu.) Still, there is a lot to like about this movie, which finds Superman grappling with the conflict between his responsibilities as Earth’s savior and his own needs of the heart. Choosing the latter, he gives up his powers to be with Lois Lane (Margot Kidder), but the timing is awful: three renegades from his home planet, Krypton, are smashing up the White House, aided by the mocking Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman). The film isn’t nearly as ambitious as its predecessor, but the accent on relationships over special effects (not that there aren’t plenty of them) is very satisfying. –Tom Keogh
