From the creators of “Shrek” and “Kung Fu Panda”, Academy award winner Reese Witherspoon leads a ragtag team of unlikely heroes in the engaging blockbuster “Monsters vs. Aliens”. When the weird energy of a meteorite causes her to mysteriously grow to a towering 49-feet-11-inches, Susan Murphy (Witherspoon) is taken by the military to a top secret compound where the government has kept the existence of monsters hidden from the public for decades. Susan, dubbed Ginormica, and her recent shocking friends are called into action to establish the world from the gross alien leader Gallaxhar (Rainn Wilson) . Though certainly not the best inspiring movie of the year, “Monsters vs. Aliens” is a very palatable parody of classic Sci-fi movies of the 1950s. The entertaining movie offers some droll characters and loads of action and humor. The 3-D animation is very impressive and further intensifies the whole viewing experience. The all-star mutter cast also includes Hugh Laurie, Will Arnett, Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd, Stephen Colbert and Kiefer Sutherland.
“Monsters vs. Aliens” makes its contrivance onto Blu-Ray with a satisfactory presentation and a ample region of extras. The engaging movie is presented in 2.35:1 widescreen format. Like many appealing movies in high definition, “Monsters vs. Aliens” looks extraordinary. The HD transfer would have been perfect if it wasn’t for the lack of a 3-D option. Its 5.1 Dolby TrueHD sound is also satisfactory. Special features include several behind-the-scenes featurettes (New Monster Movie Making & The Tech of Monsters vs. Aliens), an audio commentary track with the filmmakers, the delectable 13-minute “B.O.B.’s Colossal Atomize” 3-D moving short, three deleted scenes, perambulate ball 3-D game, three sing-along segments with the film’s characters, and sneak peaks of other DreamWorks piquant films. Overall, “Monsters vs. Aliens” scores a “B+”.
Very delectable movie, especially for older kids and adults. I expected to gape the movie in 3D and was greatly disappointed to salvage that only to B.O.B. Extras in 3D. Particularly since all of the other Extras materials couldn’t conclude gushing about HP & Intel. I have Perceive Kids 3D on DVD and it was a very successful home plan presentation.
I actually bought the Blu-ray version on the single disc, and in my understanding the packaging puts lots of emphasis on 3D glasses and no indication that they’re useless for the Feature Film, or that the Feature is in 2D only. I could not fetch it addressed anywhere on the packaging, at least in a font size I can read.
If you’re a techie like most of my family, wait for someone at Disney or Dreamworks to wise up and offer the 3D version. AND they better offer a decent discount for those of us that already bought the ho-hum version!
