Finally …… one of those DVD re-releases I’ve been practically holding my breath for, and was not disappointed. This criminally overlooked gem was trashed by critics upon its release in 1970, and never enjoyed a video transfer suited of the filmmaker’s inconvenience, not even on laserdisc! And as you can stare from the varying reviews, the controversy rages on. Which fair proves how alive and well and timely a film Catch-22 truly is.

Mike Nichols captures the essence of Joseph Heller’s defining anti-war classic quite admirably, with a faithful adaptation by Buck Henry (who can be seen along with a veritable Who’s Who period ensemble cast), with an notice as removed and honest as Kubrick, yet at times very visually subjective ….. an come venerable to stout advantage in his previous hit film The Graduate. All the verbal and ethical contradictions of the book bring its gloomy humor to demented life, through a kaleidoscopic cavalcade of archtypical characters who beget up the living nightmare of one Captain Yossarian, who has decided he can no longer acquire to glide the combat missions his superiors have made it impossible to catch out of. To obtain out of flying, he has to be officially diagnosed as “crazy”, and must ask to be grounded ….. but if he requests to be grounded, then he’s not really crazy, and is therefore eligible to preserve flying missions. A timeless theme indeed. This skewed logic is cheerfully well-liked by all the story’s characters ….. until our Yossarian’s eyes are opened to the product of that logic literally disemboweled at his fingertips (yes, that scene was set assist in!), and suddenly he is the outsider whose prime mission is to avoid any more missions. Which is not an easy thing to do when Brass keeps adding more after you’ve completed your tour of duty.

As far as the transfer itself: It has probably never looked better since the new theatrical release over 30 years ago, especially being the first widescreen release of this title, which is the only draw to experience it as intended. The transfer team did the best they could with the mono soundtrack, I’m positive, which does obtain compressed and distorted at times, something we enthusiasts of early films live with.

Mike Nichols’ Catch-22 may only devour cult space, but it is DVD releases like this (and that other oddball, star-studded 60’s curiosity Candy) that obtain one truly luxuriate in what is being done with this revolutionary medium. Hey, not all movies can be for everybody. Long live the Anti-Blockbusters!

Catch-22 is based on Joseph Heller’s unusual about an American air sinful in the Mediterranean during World War II. Again, if you are a reader IMHO the book Joseph Heller’s Catch-22 (Barron’s Book Notes) is better, the movie quicker, Starring Alan Arkin and Martin Balsam.

Recommended for fans of Alan Arkin and Martin Balsam.

I have always loved this movie for two reasons: James Cagney and James Cagney. A lesser-known Billy Wilder comedy gem, this film moves like greased lightning. An out and out farce, the new audience may not savor some of the Wintry War jokes, but the movie is composed well-worth anyone’s while to glimpse Cagney’s vivid performance and the non-stop machine-gun delivery of one-liners and asides.

The head of Coca Cola in Wintry War divided Berlin (but before the Wall), is saddled with the twit daughter (she of the over-active hormones), of one of his Coke Atlanta Office superiors. She becomes enthusiastic with an East German communist bohemian/activist, the parents from Atlanta are on the design, and all the fun begins.

The jokes are fleet fire and non-stop. The cast impeccable. I can’t imagine anyone other than Cagney doing his role (its that indelible) . In its have plot a courageous minute represent, the world was incredibly tense when this movie came out, distinguished like it is today but for different reasons. Berlin was one of the world’s “hot spots” and a face-off point with the Soviet Union and a possible spark for Armageddan. Wilder found humor in that tension and the laughs that resulted were relief at the discovery of the human comedy within the Frosty War. He keep a human face on the communists and found in their foibles the same age-old human weaknesses of greed & lust & envy. In other words, they were the same as us. That meant there was hope.

But the heck with that, its comical as hell. Win the flow.

Billy Wilder made the enormous comedy “Some Like it Hot” in 1959. The following year, he broke Academy records by winning THREE Oscars for “The Apartment” (Writer, Director, Producer) ; his next film brought James Cagney his (almost) last role, a role that exhausted him (& the audience) so grand he said he’d never acquire another film (1981’s RAGTIME brought him out of retirement for a little role) . It’s almost impossible to imagine that he was having nothing but fun. Truth is, Cagney was having problems remembering lines, Wilder was pushing him (not unlike Monroe) and wringing out of him the most energetic performance I’ve ever seen. Subtlety, social comment, contemptible events–all staples of a Wilder film–were wrought with the complete insanity taken method over the top. The station, curious Coca Cola’s executive in Berlin in 1961, revolved around family life and corporate BS, and has to be one of the most frantic & toothsome experiences, not to mention, breathless. Sparkling unlit & white Panavision photography by Daniel L. Fapp was Oscar nominated, but the rapid-fire, (often improvised) screenplay by Wilder & regular collaborator, I.A.L. Diamond was ignored by the Academy, as well as Cagney’s extraordinary performance. The acting, besides Cagney, is acceptable; Pamela Tiffen & Horst Buchholz only had to peer gorgeous and very affected, in which case their over-acting was appropriate. Arlene Francis seemed to be the “grounded force”, keeping things a bit down to earth with laughable humor. But the steady acting encourage came from the ravishing & improbable Lilo Pulver and the agile Hanns Lothar. Leon Askin, a character actor so often in unrecognizable roles, is again gleaming here. The scenes at the Tall Hotel Potemkin are hilarious, and seeing Hanns Lothar in glide is something to notice! This film is so very vital, on so many levels. Wilder laughed directly in the face of East German officials and methods; it was made because of the building of the Berlin wall; it showed Capitalism as a marvelous alternative to what was going on there; family crises were dealt wit seriously; extra-marital nonsense was treated as unprejudiced that; Cagney’s junior-Megalomania is treated justly; and the bottom line is that savor conquers all, and, as Cagney/Wilder says “It’s what makes our system work…everybody owes everybody…” A treat for all. If you haven’t seen this, TREAT YOURSELF!! There’s also a running gag, “Totally unacceptable…bulky of holes”, which I detached haven’t figured out, and I’ve seen this film at least 50 times.

Director Fritz Lang opens “Clash by Night” with a violent crashing of waves that sets the audience on edge and foreshadows the inner turbulence of the film’s protagonist, Mae Doyle. This is followed by an extended documentary sequence that was filmed on station in Monterey, California, illustrating the daily routine in the fishing town. Boats near in with their catch; their crews unload the fish; and the cannery processes them. It’s a memorable sequence, and I was surprised to score it in this relationship drama. Mae Doyle (Barbara Stanwyck) has returned to town after a 10-year absence that left her disillusioned with life, fancy and the plans she had. Her brother Joe (Keith Anders) works on a fishing boat owned by Jerry D’Amato (Paul Douglas), a ecstatic, simple-minded man who is smitten with Mae. Joe’s genuine friend Earl Pfeiffer (Robert Ryan) couldn’t be more different. He’s misogynistic, lecherous, and deeply needy. Mae is attracted and repulsed by the cynicism that she sees in Earl and shares with him. She’d like a man like Jerry to remove care of her, but knows she could never be ecstatic with that.

“Clash by Night” is based on the play by Clifford Odets, and it’s fun to try to capture out the lines that sound like Odets by their affectedness. Usually the actors teach the lines casually, so they don’t sound too histrionic. I found that the film’s strength is its documentary-like qualities, which don’t kill after the introductory sequence. The vignettes of working class life and conversations about family matters lend the film an authenticity that it really needs considering that Barbara Stanwyck’ s glamour and forcefulness seem as out of space in that town as her character professes to feel. Robert Ryan was a terrific character actor who could impartial as easily be sympathetic or loathsome, and he’s convincingly contaminated here. It’s not definite if Earl is suffering from feelings of inferiority or superiority, but he’s an overbearing, changeable, insufferable jerk. “Clash by Night” was the first film in which Marilyn Monroe had billing above the title. She’s pretty and youthful as Joe’s feisty girlfriend Peggy, even if she had pain with her lines, as Fritz Lang claimed. “Clash by Night” is a bit of melodrama, I train, in which people’s needs and desires clash with life’s realities. But strong performances and a realistic environment earn it an attractive film.

The DVD (Warner Brothers 2005) : There is an occasional flaw, but this is generally a friendly print. Bonus features are a theatrical trailer (2 ½ minutes) and an audio commentary by Peter Bogdanovich and Fritz Lang. Most of the commentary is Bogdanovich. Occasional brief contributions from Lang were recorded by Peter Bogdanovich in 1965 when he was interviewing Lang for his book “Fritz Lang in America”. It’s a top-notch commentary in which Bogdanovich provides scene-by-scene comments on the actors, characters, dialogue, filming anecdotes, and, of particular interest to me, analysis of some of the longer shots and cuts. Subtitles for the film are available in English, Spanish, and French.

The storyline revolves around Mae Doyle (Barbara Stanwick) who returns to a Northern California fishing community after a ten-year hiatus. She left that town hoping to gain a wealthy or prestigious man to marry, but her dreams never materialized. Upon returning she runs into an faded acquaintance, Jerry D’Amato (Paul Douglas), at a bar and they later open dating even though they have very dinky in well-liked. Jerry is hardworking and stable, yet a lifeless simpleton. Mae is fickle and shallow. Jerry introduces Mae to his best friend Earl (Robert Ryan) who is cantankerous yet very extroverted - glowing great the sincere opposite of Jerry. From this point on in the movie, the human dynamics these three people go all over the plot and do into an bewitching status for the viewer.

I was initially taken off guard with the plan the film ended, but I couldn’t secure it out of my head for the rest of the day and realized it took a very heroic direction with the issues it confronted. Furthermore, the movie is probably more representative of today’s social landscape than it was when the film was made and has some hard-hitting commentary for the consequences of people’s actions. There is however, one scene that is clearly politically wrong by today’s standards where Earl imitates a Chinese person. The movie also contained some refreshing scenes of a young Marilyn Monroe who plays the girlfriend of Mae’s brother. Overall I give the film a solid recommendation for viewing.

The DVD is remastered but not restored and as a result, the dusky and white transfer is though-provoking but occasionally dinky spots of film deterioration can be observed. The sound is aesthetic. The DVD comes with commentary by Peter Bogdanovich, with audio interview excerpts of director Fritz Lang.

PLEASE NOTE: Before buying this DVD, assume buying the Film Noir Classic Collection, Vol. 2 which contains this movie plus four other highly recommended movies at a very reasonable imprint.

The Criterion DVD has an estimable transfer of the print which is presented in its new monural sound. The extras on the disc deserve a perceive. Also included are vintage interviews with Alain Resnais and star Emmanuelle Reve. A 2003 interview with Reve is a highlight of the disc and should not be missed. As with most works of art that probe a subtle truth, “Hiroshima Mon Amour” will confuse a lot of people. On the surface, this film appears to be outlandish stare of failed romance and anti-social behavior. The characters, an unidentified French woman and Japanese man are having a brief and transitory appreciate affair in Hiroshima, many years after World War II. Both of them are married (the man professes to treasure his wife) and neither is a stranger to anonymous fancy affairs.

Although neither party knows the other’s name, they fraction crucial aspects of their history and identity with each other. The man is a resident of Hiroshima who was away serving in the army when the city was bombed. During the war, the woman lived in an occupied French city called Nevers and fell in care for with a German soldier. When the soldier was killed the woman was punished for being a collaborator and was subsequently banished to her parents’ basement for several month where in her contain words she became “excited with spite”.

The film opens by interweaving scenes of the man and woman making treasure, with scenes of Hiroshima bombing victims. This tells us that their story-particularly their cherish affair-is rooted in an act of unimaginable destruction. In the man’s case, everything returns to the bombing of Hiroshima. When the woman tells him of the different monuments and documentary footage of the bombing she encountered, he replies that she has seen nothing. Anyone familiar with the long running TV series, THE WALTONS, will immediately gape some similarities in this film. It was written by the same author but predates the Waltons in terms of its production. Smooth, there are many similarities as well as a few differences.

The Waltons takes status during the era of the titanic depression. Spencer’s Mountain has the 1950’s written all over it although it never gives a particular time. The Waltons takes region approach Walton Mountain in the Southeast while this film takes position come Spencer’s Mountain in the Broad Tetons. The TV series had John-Boy as the eldest son of the family and the movie has Clay-Boy in the same role. Both of these young men gaze knowledge and thirst for education. The patriarch of both families is relatively abominable and struggles to provide for the family but is a faithful husband and father with those duties as the top priority. Both are wholesome and a bit of Americana. Somebody who liked the Waltons should like Spencer’s Mountain as well.

Henry Fonda plays the lead and does so in a likeable manner. He will sacrifice anything, including his dreams, for the sake of his family. Maureen O’Hara plays the mother. She is a helpful, church going woman and the anchor of the family. James MacArthur plays the eldest son. He is dutiful but yearns to net away and better himself. He wants to do something besides work in the quarry all his life.

As I said before, it is all very wholesome fare. I don’t deem it’s as sterling as the Waltons but it is detached very well-behaved.

This is quiet one of my passe time favorites. Substantial acting, breaktaking landscapes, fabulous music secure and a right message that we in this recent century will never peruse the likes of again. This is pure entertainment from beginning to ruin. The struggles of growing up, first cherish kiss, a father’s admire for his wife and kids (rare these days) and the togetherness of the American family that no longer exist. If you need an education or weather you honest want to peer a tremendous older film this is the one for you and it is well-behaved for all ages which even the “G” rated films of today are questionable. You won’t go unpleasant. You’ll laugh and you’ll yell and say I remember it well.

Who would have idea that a collie could inspire such loyalty and devotion from movie goers? When Loewes Inc. President Nicholas Schenk first screened “Lassie Reach Home” he reportedly told director, Fred Wilcox that it was so dreadful he was going to recommend to MGM’s mogul, L.B. Mayer, that the film not be released. Thankfully, Mayer plan otherwise and the film, with all its maudlin charm and abundantly potent sentimentality, became one of the biggest grossing films of 1943. What makes “Lassie Approach Home” such an bewitching and enduring cinematic experience is the tender and wistful relationship between Joe Carraclough (Roddy McDowell) and his trusty four-legged companion. When Joe’s father, Sam (Donald Crisp) is forced to sell Lassie to the wealthy, Duke of Rudling (Nigel Bruce), Joe’s heart is shattered. But the collie refuses to pause with his current master, crossing hill and dale, stream and mountain in a picturesque slip that is in the best tradition of travelogue meets melodrama. At the age of ten, Elizabeth Taylor completely captivates as Pricilla, the Duke’s granddaughter who eventually realizes that the bond between Joe and Lassie can never and should never be broken. Truthfully, I found myself getting a lump in the throat when at last Joe - who can’t have his eyes when, after some time Lassie suddenly appears patiently waiting for him outside in the school yard - utters the now powerful clichéd and overplayed “Oh, there’s my Lassie, near home!” This film is the sort of MGM glamorous treatment that all of the studio’s best movies had in spades. It’s lushly photographed and vibrantly told with poignant performances that have long withstood the test of time.

Warner’s DVD is somewhat of a disappointment. Not having considered the overall magnitude and enduring impact of the film on audiences Warner has not done a thing to restore “Lassie Reach Home” to its modern brilliance. The traditional film negative exhibits a very dated record with inconsistently rendered colors that, at times, are vibrant - if garish - and other times, quite pale and uninspiring. Age related artifacts abound throughout and there is a worthy amount of edge enhancement and pixelization. Overall, handsome details are very nicely realized. However, difference and shaded levels are not very solid. The audio is mono but respectably cleaned up and presented with a fidelity that outweighs the visual characteristics. There are NO extras.

This is a helpful film, taken nearly word-for-word from Eric Knight’s unique about the faithful collie who travels a thousand miles from northern Scotland to England to return to the boy she loves. Lassie is neither Superdog or magically endowed, fair following passe instincts and the treasure in her heart. The entire cast is capable, the color brings the countryside to life, and little scenes will lag your heart out, including Dame May Whitty as a lonely broken-down lady willing to let Lassie go rather than have her fret.

Henry Lee Lucas (Michael Rooker) and his buddy Otis (Tom Towels) maybe your typical buddies but secretly they are murderers in Chicago. Henry has a fetish for having sex with dull bodies and animals including an appetite for assassinate at night secretly, hell even Otis and Henry both video tape killing people for their pleasures. Henry seems to be falling for his buddy’s hot sister Becky (Tracy Arnold) but Otis doesn’t want that, he wants to withhold his scandalous secrets to himself away from the girl he desires as he’s actually a staunch monster within.

A considerable, brutal and original fright drama thriller from writer-director John McNaughton is one of the greatest and most disturbing anxiety movies ever made. Based on the murders and life of Henry Lee Lucas who is a real-life killer, The film is very realistic and hard to scrutinize at times even with the gory slay sequences and snuff-filmmaking scenes, the film is praised as a colorful and horrific fragment of cinema that really kicks you in the gut and never lets go. The film was made in 1986 but got an X-rating due to crude violence and subject matter but didn’t got to peek the light of day in theaters until 1990 without a rating but tons of praise. It’s not like your typical slasher movie, this is a very human and terrific movie that takes you inside the mind of a monster.

This Blu-Ray offers fine recount with quality sound with amazing extras like audio commentary, trailer, unruffled gallery, documentary, deleted scenes and outtakes with optional commentary, storyboards and interview with the director.

I dont gawk the point in investing in a blu ray if they are not going to give you the beefy version of a movie, i have the regular dvd and its 130 minutes long. 2 stars honest cause its blu ray. by the draw this is not a legal epic objective the names of the characters are trusty.

After eagerly awaiting for the sequel due to the begin ending of RESIDENT Faulty, and being teased by realistic “ad” trailers I was ready to stare Apocalypse.

This movie did not disappoint, in fact I may boldly area it is the best action/horror movie I have yet watched. Mila Jovanavich is again compelling to view in the lead role as the sole survivor from the first movie. (Well technically she isn’t the SOLE survivor, but don’t want to provide more spoiler than neccessary to whet Amazonians appetite.

She had already been through hell surviving the HIVE, the awakens to ogle the whole of Raccoon City fallen prey to the virus. Snappily she joins a shrimp, certain group of humans who acquire a deal with an Umbrella scientist to be able to leave the quarantined city in return for rescuing his daughter.

The action in this movie is intense, yet being a Resident Execrable movie there are some genuinely creepy scenes as well. Although APOCALYPSE is heavy on action and special effects there are characters here as well including Jill Valentine from the video game.

In fact I barely played Resident Inappropriate so my memory was foggy, but friends confirmed that as the puny I remembered led me to suspect this movie stayed really lawful to the game. One criticism I have heard is that it lacks the fable that the first had, to which I answer hey it’s a video game adaptation movie not Shakespeare. In other words this movie delivered exactly what I expected and powerful more, the fact that it was filmed obviously in Toronto, where I grew up was honest that noteworthy more of a bonus.

As far as shlocky zombie films go the R.E. franchise is my well-liked. I did perfer the first one.

As a “Torontoian” I have to say it was fun to observe if a bit hard to suspend disbelief I found that I had to retain telling myself “that’s not Toronto City all It’s Racoon City City Hall… or that’s not the CN Tower in the background, pretend it’s not there.”

I contemplate that dispite what the reviewer said the visuals were well done, I enjoyed the fact that “loyal” effects were extinct where it was not ablsoutly nessisary to spend CGI ie. Milla Jovovich’s (Alice) stunt double running down the side of city hall and Milla doing the last 60 feet herself, this was all done in true time and not on a blue/green cloak nor CG.

If you put a question to Citizen Kane from this movie then perhaps you aught to rethink you choice in Genre. It’s a *Bleeping* horror/action/sci-fi flick for goodnessakes not high art.

The DVD special features are extraordinary also 3 comentaries, the one with Milla, Sienna, and Oded kept me chuckling Milla has a incredible sense of humor. Outakes: comical. 20 deleted/exended scenes, and featurettes galore about everything you could want to know about the making of and gradual the scenes of Resident Evil: Apocalypse.

This is one of the finest episodes of Doctor Who I have ever seen. The fable is astonishing. It starts off on a planet that has been at war with another planet for hundreds of years. They have a “no prisoners” attitude and that provides for an extremely provocative location twist later on in the film. THIS Sage ROCKS!!! END

In their search to the final segment to the Key To Time, the Doctor and Romana land on war-torn Atrios, which has been fighting a war of attrition against its twin Zeos. As there’s variable radiation counts even 140 meters beneath the surface, one can imagine what it’s like on the surface. The Doctor jokingly says of the high radiation reading that it might not necessarily be nuclear war, that someone might be holding a astronomical breakfast party.

Things initiate unpleasant, as usual. The Marshall, the military leader conducting the war, mistakes the Doctor and Romana as Zeon spies, yet he does a volte-face and welcomes the Doctor as “the one to head us to victory.” However, he’s not all he seems. One, he makes his decisions by meditating and mumbling in front of a dismal reflective surface. Two, he has a small dismal object around his neck. Three, he and Princess Astra, a figurehead in charge of people’s morale and comfort, are at odds what with her pacifist stance.

Astra and her lover, the surgeon Merak, are trying to contact Zeos to try to negotiate a peace, but something is jamming their communications. The same jamming that is blocking the navigation system of the Marshall’s hastily, perhaps? First Astra, then the TARDIS, and then the Doctor vanishes, kidnapped by infamous masked figures in dim robes. On Zeos, he meets his nemesis the Shadow, who’s working for the Dismal Guardian in the same arrangement the Doctor’s working for the White Guardian.

The Doctor’s condemnation of a war fought by machines is given when he describes the commandant of the Zeon side as a “passionless lump of mineral and circuitry, highly efficient, doing very well, giving Atrios a beating, killing millions without a flicker, impartial doing it’s job, and it’s totally invincible.” Yet it’s programmed to not secure defeat, and as the Doctor says, “there’ll be a rather vast bang, immense enough to acquire Zeos, catch Atrios with with it, and compose the whole thing ruin in a sort of plan. That’s the arrangement these military minds work-the armageddon factor.” But the record condemns war period; even the lamely romantic patriotic drama in the beginning is a satire on propaganda movies.

I agree with K-9’s definition of optimism: “plan that everything will work out well. Irrational, bordering on insanity.” And the Doctor lectures Romana on optimism, but doing an about face as he goes on: “Listen Romana, whenever you go into a fresh location, you must always hold the best until you gain out exactly what the situation’s all about, then possess the worst.” Romana: “Ah, but what happens if it turns out not to be the worst after all? ” Doctor: “Don’t be ridiculous. It always is.” Classic Tom Baker comedy good there.

John Woodvine does an portrayal of the Marshall as a ruthless leader fanatical on victory. “You don’t beg for peace… you glean it!” he tells Astra. He’s someone who’d exercise the ultimate deterrent, and when the Doctor ironically congratulates him on having a typical military mind, he takes it as a compliment, missing the irony. His patriotic speeches gain in mind Churchill’s morale speeches during WW2, but with a more rabid edge. And Lalla Ward (Astra) would regularly appear as Romana in the next two seasons, replacing Mary Tamm.

But in Episode 5, we meet Drax, a renegade Time Lord who picked up a chirpy Cockney accent, and Barry Jackson’s presence lightens things up when the record plods along.

As the final account to the Key To Time season, The Armageddon Factor draws it to a conclusion, but leaving with it an atmosphere of “Is that what it’s all been about? ” It also suffers from aged characters and continuity errors, such as Merak shining things about the Key To Time though not told about it, and dreadful acting, such as the Shadow’s diabolical laughter. The weakest of the six stories, although redeemed by the themes of the follies of war, especially total war. Rating: 3.5, rounded to 4.
