While it offers nothing new to the military action genre, Tears of the Sun distinguishes itself with fine acting, expert craftsmanship, and seriousness of purpose. Its familiar “extraction mission” plot is essentially similar to that of Black Hawk Down, involving a crack team of U.S. Special Ops commandos struggling to rescu innocent missionaries amidst the bloody horror of Nigerian ethnic cleansing. With Bruce Willis as their grizzled, no-nonsense commander, the skillful team enters a hot zone that gets even hotter when their “package”–an American national (Monica Bellucci) who runs the isolated mission–demands that 70 Nigerian villagers be included in the rescu. Willis’s uneasy conscience leads him to defy orders and expand his mission, and in an ambitious follow up to Training Day, director Antoine Fuqua escalates tension and strike-force with considerable emotional impact. Originally considered as a potential entry in Willis’s Die Hard series, and released on the eve of America’s war with Iraq, Tears of the Sun admirably avoids jingoism with its rousing story of personal good vs. political evil. –Jeff Shannon

A varied collection of vintage newsreel clips, audio material, and even movie trailers documents 1941, a year in which America tried to focus on a spectacular baseball season though entry into World War II would prove to be inevitable. The Movietone newsreel footage assembled in this collection contains lighthearted segments on the crowning of a new Miss America, a cotton picking contest, a motorboat show, and the New York Yankees defeating the Brooklyn Dodgers in the World Series. But the war news dominates. Dramatic footage shows damage from German air raids over London, including scenes of bomb damage on the famed clock Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, and the House of Commons. The biggest news event of 1941 was the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, and as it happened a Movietone cameraman was at the naval base to film the fleet. His footage, which was first approved by government authorities, is remarkable, showing the battleship Arizona as it burned after being bombed. An audio portion of the disc (still images are shown onscreen while it plays) contains live broadcasts by the bands of Harry James and Glenn Miller, and news broadcasts, including the entire “date which will live in infamy” speech President Roosevelt delivered before Congress following the Pearl Harbor attack. A collection of five movie trailers from 1941, including an unusual and innovative trailer for Citizen Kane, completes an informative and entertaining look at a remarkable year. –Robert J. McNamara

An inspiring story about the unlikely story of Ralph Walker, a ninth grader who outran everyone’s expectations except his own in his bold qust of trying to win the 1954 Boston Marathon. According to A.D. Vision, “a fresh, clean digital transfer of Robotech from the original film stock” returns the cult favorite to “a lovely and near-pristine state.” The new release looks darker than the previous DVD, especially the colors at the blu end of the spectrum. But the original elements have faded badly, and correcting the problems would have required enormous amounts of time and money. The faces of Lisa and the other female characters remain pallid, pink and white masks; the shading around Rick Hunter’s eyes makes him look like a raccoon in some shots. The added footage “cut from the original broadcast version” amounts to little more than different commercial lead-ins and an occasional brief image like the one of Rick and Roy Fokker in biplanes in “Booby Trap.” (Rated 13 and older, but suitable for ages 8 and older: violence, restricted to spaceship and robot battles) –Charles Solomon

Shot on video in color and black and white, indie-god Hal Hartley’s The Girl from Monday imagines a not-too-distant future in which the Multi-Media Monopoly (Triple M) corporation rules over a real consumer culture. Individuals have bar codes implanted on their wrists and their stock fluctuates according to their sexual activity. Bucking the system are the Partisans, a rag-tag group of “counter-revolutionaries with no credit rating.” Hartley veteran Bill Sage (The Unbelievable Truth, Trust, Flirt, Simple Men, No Such Thing) stars as Jack, a disillusioned Triple M advertising executive. Sabrina Lloyd (Sports Night) costars as Jack’s rebellious co-worker, with Brazilian model Tatiana Abracos as the enigmatic eponymous character, an alien who takes ravishing human form when she falls to earth. The Sopranos‘ Edie Falco, who co-starred in Hartley’s The Unbelieveable Truth and Trust, graciously appears as a judge. More interested in ideas than special effects, Hartley’s characteristically deadpan “science fiction” is not likely to win him a wider audience beyond his core, cult following. Fans of Chris Marker’s La Jetee may also find this film a stylistic kindred spirit with its haunting use of still images. –Donald Liebenson
