Many years ago, long before James Bond became the high-tech hero of the movie set, there were a set of fascinating books written by a gentleman named Ian Fleming. These books were about a superior British Intelligence agent, code name 007. With due regard to Sean Connery and the equally effective Timothy Dalton, George Lazenby, the star of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, is by far the closest of the Bond actors to the character of the books. There is nothing charming or even particularly likeable about the James Bond of print. He is a totally non-descript character who can easily disappear into any crowd; a cold-blooded killer who will accomplish his mission regardless of the cost. Connery came close in Dr No, Tim Dalton even closer in License to Kill but both are too physically attractive to accurately depict 007. In these regards, Lazenby excels in his protrayal of Bond.

This story is a gripping, emotional tale of an agent committing the ultimate sin, getting involved with another individual involved in a mission. All of the normal Bond components are present; gadgetry, high-speed chases, lots of explosions and lots of pretty girls. This one goes one step farther, giving us a truly malevolent villain (played brilliantly by Telly Savalas)and Bond’s only true romantic interest (played equally brilliantly by Diana Rigg).

The action is non-stop, the locations are beautiful, the soundtrack one of the best. The climax is one of the most gut-wrenching ever placed on film.

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service has often been placed at the very bottom of the long list of James Bond vehicles. It doesn’t belong there. This is an outstanding film with a truly outstanding cast. Give it a try. You won’t be disappointed.

When other Bond fans first talk to me the the question they always ask is “What do you think of O.H.M.S.S. ?”. The answer to that is not a simple one.

I first saw the film in the cinima in 1973 and was surprised, given all the negative reports I’d heard about it, how good it was. Although very long by Bond standards the film moves along at a fair clip and has the capacity to engage the viewer. Although several of the earlier films in the series follow the main plot lines from the novels, from which they take their names, this is the only atempt by EON to film an Ian Fleming book as written.

Watching the film on DVD all these years later was a joy. The transfer is surperb the, sound crisp and short of watching a pristine print in a film theatre this is the best vision of this film your ever going to see. The additional features particularly the director’s commentry make this a must for any of the many fans that this film has.

O.H.M.S.S has a tremendous “look” and the deep purple colour that is in the opening sequence, continues in the titles and is seen through out the rest of the film in various guises. There was a kind of chic fashion just at the end of the sixties after the hippies and before the seventies gave style a bad name; this is one of the few films that captures that time. Just look at the cut of James Bond’s suits or the dresses worn by the girls in Piz Gloria; it’s nostalgia perhaps but I love it!

George Lazenby is element of the film that most people seem to dislike and the fact that he started out as a model is usually sited as proof of his lack of acting ability; well actually Sean Connery started out as an art college life model. At least George kept his clothes on in the “Big Fry” ads. ! But seriously, for the most part he looks great in the action sequences and when he has to play the normal affable, laughing in the face of danger, side of Bond he’s at least acceptable; but when he has to step out side of that, for instance when he confronts Tracy in his hotel room early on in the film that he becomes less convincing. Compare that with Sean’s Bond when he confronts Tatiana in the train in “From Russia With Love” and you’ll see what I’m getting at. But actually his attempt is better than Roger Moore’s confrontation with Rosie in “Live And Let Die”. The only difficulty is that each line Lazenby speaks seems to be made up of several different takes, all recorded at different sound levels, which makes him sound as if he has a perminant attack of hiccups; still you do get used to it. If Lazenby lacks experience his deficiency is compenceted by the standard of acting from the rest of the cast and the superior dialogue in this film; for example, Moneypenny’s devastating put down when Bond attempts to resign the Service “What did you expect, a knighthood?” is unforgetable and one of the few times Lois Maxwell’s character gets the upper hand in the whole series.

The structure of this film is very different from the others in the series; Bond spends the first half of the film meeting and falling in love with Tracy. He then locates Blofeld, discovers his plan and only then does the film shift up into the frenetic pace that we more normally associate with the Bond films. The ski and car chase sequences that follow are terrifically exciting and compare favourably with the best in the series. Then we have the final confrontation with Blofeld and inevitable distruction of Piz Gloria. Incidentally Lazenby’s encounter with the St. Bernard dog after the bob sleigh chase was apparently ad-libbed and for an untrained actor he does it better than many RADA graduates I can think of.

Peter Hunt, more than anyone else, was the man brought this film together as a first time director it is a brilliant debut. For instance his choice of Simon Ravan to add dialoge to the scenes between Blofeld and Tracy lifts the whole film. Almost every shot seems to reflect his feel for the book. It is only fitting that the opening shot of the film, absent form the VHS version, which containes his reflection in the brass name plate of “Universal Exports” has been restored to this print.

Many action film fans dislike this picture well they’d better stick to “Things Keep Exploding III” which at least is better than “Things Keep Exploding II” although not as good as “Things Keep Exploding” although it lacks the characterization of the other two. The rest of us can enjoy the most literate of the James Bond films. It’s not better or worse than any of the others just different.

I bought this dvd from our local grocery store, which sold them out VERY fast. The fall story about papa raising the largest pumpkin is very good, has a great moral lesson too. One of the main reasons this was purchased was for the Bad Dream story on it, which is well loved in the book form in this house. However, the story is completely different on the DVD, and that was quite disappointing because the book is quite funny. Wish they hadn’t rewritten that one. Other than that, it’s been viewed over and over and over again in this house and hasn’t grown tired. Highly recommend!

I thought kids shouldn’t watch movies until they are five. Then I had twins! We limit movies to 1/2 hr a day and some days don’t watch any. That said the Berenstain Bears immediately appealed to all the family because the stories are sweet and simple, but deal with real world problems. There’s a focus on values and ethics, but it’s still fun and cute for the kids. My girls (age three) never tire of seeing these stories over and over. They especially like the ones that are just a little bit scary such as the “Green Eyed Monster” in which Sister Bear has a frightening dream about her envy.

Between 1999 and 2003, the unique sci-fi television series “Farscape” was aired on the Sci-Fi Channel in the U.S. Filmed in Australia primarily by Jim Henson Productions with assistance from several Australian production companies and some funding from the Sci-Fi Channel, the series developed a strong following and was under contract for a total of five seasons. However, various funding & political issues forced the premature cancellation of the show following the fourth season (a total of 88 episodes), much to the dismay of loyal fans who (for the most part, including myself) were greatly disappointed by the inconclusive events left in the final minutes of the final fourth-season episode.

However, under the leadership of Jim Henson’s (1936-1990) son, Brian Henson (Jim Henson Productions’ president & CEO), Jim Henson Productions was able to secure full control over “Farscape”, allowing it to produce a four-hour mini-series in 2004 to provide a better closure for the existing four seasons than the final events of the final fourth-season episode. Entitled “Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars”, the four-hour mini-series was ostensibly equivalent to what the planned fifth season would have been, albeit much shorter, but in no way less wonderful or engaging as the original 88 episodes. On the contrary, thanks to Brian Henson’s efforts (which included directing the mini-series himself), “Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars” was a fantastic, engaging and powerful conclusion for one of the best sci-fi television series that has ever been produced.

Seamlessly beginning where the final fourth-season episode ended, all of the cast members from the final fourth season returned in “Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars”. This includes the no-nonsense Earth astronaut John Crichton (Ben Browder), his fiancée Peacekeeper Aeryn Sun (Claudia Black), Ka D’Argo (Anthony Simcoe), Chiana (Gigi Edgley), Rygel XVI (voice of Jonathan Hardy), ‘Pilot’ (voice of Lani John Tupu), Scorpius/Harvey (Wayne Pygram), Sikozu Shanu (Raelee Hill), Joolushko Tunai Fenta Hovalis (Tammy McIntosh), Stark (Paul Goddard), Utu-Noranti Pralatong (Melissa Jaffer), Skarin Emperor Staleek (Duncan Young), Skarin War Minister Akhna (Francesca Buller), Peacekeeper Commandant Mele-on-Grayza (Rebecca Riggs), Peacekeeper Captain Meeklo Braca (David Franklin), Ka D’Argo’s son Jothee (Nathaniel Dean) and wormhole alien dubbed ‘Einstein’ (John Bach).

With exquisite special effects, superb direction, an engaging & consistent plot and excellent acting, I rate “Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars” with a resounding 5 out of 5 stars and very highly recommend it to all “Farscape” fans. Some of the many memorable scenes in “Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars” include Rygel’s efforts to help restore John & Aeryn and the subsequent consequences, the various battle scenes both in space and on the ground, John’s solution to war, and the birth. Many thanks go to Brian Henson and the many wonderful actors and film crew that brought “Farscape” back to life. On a side note, Ben Browder has received four Saturn Award nominations from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films, of which he won one in 2002 for “Best Actor in a Television Series”.

We all know the drill. JC, astronaut, is shot through a wormhole and joins up with a crew of a ship, a living ship, as they blast through space one season at a time. Along the way they run into multiple baddies, destroy a wide array of bases, depositories, and even a few civilizations, and they also become something of a family. Sometimes that makes for humor, sometimes for seasons of sadness, and sometimes for thrilling adventure.

Such is Farscape.

For those who don’t know about the series all that well, it is one of the few I’d tout as a complete product that can’t be hyped enough. Following the exploits of John C. and the crew was a thrilling whirlwind to take part in because it evoked so many emotions and rewarded you, the viewer, for riding shotgun through the wormhole. You saw the transitions from character introduction plots and awkward travels to the becoming of crew labelled with words like “notoriety,” “infamy,” and a message filled with the hope for a better tomorrow. You even had the “little things” handed to you, from references to brushing teeth and how alien lifeforms could communicate, and you got it all with an Earth twist. Personally I’ve never pulled for “the good guy” before, not really one to touch base with the cliche characters in most shows, but the crew of Moya was different. They actually touched me with their plights and the ways they could always turn a bad situation into something worse and still come out alive, and I found myself addicted to it by the end of Season Two. That all seemed to come to an abrupt end when the plug was pulled on the series, though, and many people weren’t happy with the cliffhanger ending. So, amidst a flurry of protest and the knowledge that Farscape sells, the Peacekeeper Wars was born.

Vaguely commenting, the storyline picks right up where we left off, taking into consideration a few things I didn’t think of and setting off a war that everyone watching knew was going to come. You could smell it brewing, the Scarrans threatening too many people and Scorpius standing too close to that end, and when it falls it falls beautifully. I was actually taken by all the digital love the series was shown in this miniseries, shocked in a way by the amount of currency I saw circulating in those lovely ship battles, and I loved it. Added to this is the continuation of the tale of the main characters, with even Rygel getting a little news of home and the promise of things to come. And those these comments have to be vague, I can say with certainty that the storyline flowed and wasn’t forced. If you liked the series, you’ll love the taste of this brew as well, with all its emotional kicks in tow.

One other thing to note in all of this is that EVERYONE was back and taking part in this epic piece. I’m not talking about the crew and the main biggies, either, but I’m instead filtering through the “little guys” and happily noting their faces. Bracca, possibly one of my favorites, is joined by an array of people that take part in the series, again rewarding people that were perhaps wondering where they’d all gone. By and large, it is a complete set of faces to admire (and without that “guest spot” taste).

So, in a nutshell, buy this BUT ONLY if you’ve kept up with the series. If not, it would be akin to reading the final chapter in a book and trying to taste the textures. To those who wanted it, though, it has come and it felt good to have more. By the frelling gods, I’m still pumped up from seeing it.

Few films have touched me as deeply as “Ushpizin,” the story of Moshe and Mali Bellanga, their trusting in miracles, and their recognition of the tests God has placed in their path. They sometimes fail the tests, but they are always aware that God is in their midst, and they listen for His voice. The fervor of Moshe and Mali’s prayers bring about a miracle, and also a great challenge, in the form of a friend of Moshe’s “from the old days,” and his companion, both escaped convicts. The plot takes place during the 7 day Harvest Festival of Succoth, and some of it is quite humorous, but every scene is imbued with an insight into humanity, and man’s connection to his Creator.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Ushpizin! Click Here

Writer Shuli Rand stars as Moshe, with his real-life wife, Michal Bat-Sheva Rand as Mali; both are superb, with an intensity and truth in their characters that makes them totally believable, and an inner and outer beauty that captivates. Shot on location in the Mea Sherim quarter in Jerusalem, director Giddi Dar gives us marvelous details and performances from the actors in every scene. Shaul Mizrahi and Ilan Ganani are terrific as the 2 convicts, and so is Avraham Abutboul as Ben Baruch, the man who means well, but causes trouble, and won’t leave until he is forgiven with a hug. The theme of forgiveness and repentance runs through the film, as well as God’s great mercy.

Though this film will perhaps have a limited audience, those who will love it are anyone with familiarity and respect for Orthodox Judaism, and anyone who has a very personal relationship with his God. There are those who think the Orthodox Jew who speaks to God as though He is their most precious friend is a little “odd,” and then there are those who speed down the freeway like a lemming with a cellphone stuck in their ear, and think they are “normal.” Well, it takes all kinds to populate this crazy planet, and may the Moshes and Malis of the world prosper and bear much fruit.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Ushpizin! Click Here

Ushpizin is a warm and touching film about a childless, kind and poor Chasidic couple who live in Me’ah Shearim, the most ultra-Orthodox Jewish neighborhood in the world on the outskirts of the Old City in Jerusalem, and their enormous faith in and love for God. Moshe studies in yeshiva all day, and Mali tries to make ends meet as an at-home businesswoman. It’s just before the Jewish festival of Sukkot, and Moshe and Mali are down on their luck. Their prayers are answered when an unexpected gift of money arrives on their doorstep from the communal fund; they are overjoyed that they can now have guests for the festival. They pray again for guests, and when two prison escapees and friends from Moshe’s criminal past arrive, their prayers for much more than guests are unexpectedly answered.

There are many films portraying ultra-Orthodox Jewish life, but to those familiar with that life from an insider’s perspective, many of them are inauthentic. This film stands out as a wonderful exception in that small genre. It is such an authentic portrayal of Chasidic life and values that I believe many Chasidim, who normally would never watch films, might eventually watch it and be happy to consciously gain from its beautifully and often humorously delivered messages of the power of love, acceptance, trust in God and sincerity.

When MGM first released Moonstruck on DVD they inexplicably did so with an inferior pan and scan transfer. They’ve rectified this situation with a new deluxe edition that restores its proper aspect ratio and with a collection of new extras. Moonstruck was the My Big Fat Geek Wedding of its day only infinitely better and about an Italian family as opposed to a Greek one. Watching Norman Jewison’s film again, you realize just how much Nia Vardalos’ film is heavily indebted to it. If Moonstruck is La Boheme than Greek Wedding is Tony and Tina’s Wedding.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Moonstruck! Click Here

It’s time to use your old disc as a coaster as this edition is definitely worth the double dip. MGM has taken TBS’ dinner and a movie to the next level by including three recipe cards with fine Italian meals so that you can do your own cooking and eat it while watching the movie.

Carried over from the previous edition is the audio commentary by Cher, director Norman Jewison and screenwriter John Patrick Shanley. Both Jewison and Shanley talk about their fascination with death while Cher talks about the importance of costume and how it helps her get into character. This is a solid commentary with smart observations and excellent anecdotes from everyone.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Moonstruck! Click Here

“Moonstruck: At the Heart of an Italian Family” takes us through the genesis of the film mixing interviews done at the time of filming (Cage and Cher) and new ones (Aiello and Dukakis). There is great, behind-the-scenes rehearsal footage as Jewison and Shanley take us through the film telling several entertaining anecdotes.

“Pastas to Pastries: The Art of Fine Italian Food” is a tour of some of the best restaurants in Little Italy, in particular on Mulberry Street. You have six different places to choose from and their chefs demonstrate how to make a few choice foods guaranteed to make you hungry. If you love to cook and eat than this extra is for you.

Finally there is the “Music of Moonstruck” that examines the role that music plays in the movie. The first screening went badly because the music was all wrong.

A great flick. Five stars is not enough. Cher & Cage are awesome together. Gardenia & Dukakis (as Cher’s parents) are almost as brilliant. The backdrops of Manhattan and Brooklyn look terrific. Some great & memorable scenes… 1. Cher meeting Cage for the first time in the bakery basement, 2. Cage expressing his love for her the morning after, 3. Dukakis & Mahoney having dinner together & walking home, 4. Cher & Cage, (and her father and his “date”) at the opera, and 5. The family sitting around the kitchen table when husband to-be Aiello shows up. Six Oscar nominations - and three awards. Cher & Dukakis were very deserving and this was easily the best screenplay of the year. How director Norman Jewison didn’t win the Oscar is beyond me. I ran out and bought the delux ‘06 edition the week it was released. Slight picture upgrade - the widescreen is definitely better than the full frame, but there’s no impprovement on the sound… dare I say it’s worse. The music and most of the dialogue sounds like it is standard stereo (perhaps even mono at some points)… but the real kicker is the background music is so loud at times you can’t hear the character talking. Great movie, but I feel it deserved better treament on the re-release.

An amazing lost work of African-American cinema. Filled with surreal and sensuous imagery, and a haunting performance by the late Duane Jones (Night Of The Living Dead), this may not be a film for everyone, but for the adventurous it will reward your time and patience. By virtue of rescuing this film from the obscurity in which its lived for so long, this DVD would rate 5 stars. But on top of a superb restoration and transfer, you also get an informative and impassioned commentary track, a gallery of beautiful stills, and a well-written analysis/history of the film. Taken together, this is a triumph of no small magnitude.

Bill Gunn’s Ganja and Hess, originally released in 1973, has had a checkered career, to say the least. It was chopped, slashed, re-edited, and re-released no less than FIVE times throughout the 70s and 80s with five additional titles–very likely a record. Its original length of 110 minutes was sliced down to 78 minutes by Fima Novick in the original chopped version (Blood Couple), but as Tim Lucas points out in his terrific essay included in this DVD release, Novick introduced a few elements missing from the original that were actually helpful in clarifying the action.

This DVD release is the full director’s cut and that is all to the good. Yet this version of the film is hard to follow unless you have some backstory. For example, without knowing that the main character, a black intellectual, Hess Green, somehow came across a Myrthian dagger and then accidentally (or is it on purpose?) was scratched or stabbed with it by his assistant, George Meda (played by the director himself)–AND that this dagger’s touch can bring on vampirism–you would never know how Hess got to be the way he was. The scene in which this is supposedly revealed has such vague exposition that it leaves you scratching your head trying to figure out how things got from point A to point B.

Yet the film also boasts some brilliant dream imagery, some of the best in any film from the 70s, if not since then as well. These dream scenes give the film tremendous power.

But the dream scenes are juxtaposed with other scenes that seem somewhat too long for their purpose, or that don’t really go anywhere. For example, in one scene, deleted from the chopped version, Hess talks to his son–who looks to be about 13 or 14–speaking in French to him, asking him about his studies at his private school. This is no doubt meant to bring out Hess’ social and intellectual standing as a man of culture and refinement. But the son is never seen in the rest of the film and the scene seems completely isolated from the rest of the movie.

In another scene, Hess visits a white woman from a trashy part of town. It’s obvious what the purpose of the visit is, and this is no doubt to bring out Hess’ conflicted character. This does work to some extent, in that later on, he goes to church, supposedly for absolution based on his deeds, but there is too much fragmentation of purpose working in this film to make it cohere.

It’s a fascinating failure. Ganja Meda, played by Marlene Clark, is another frustratingly developed character. She discovers her husband, George, is dead, but while suspicion definitely points to Hess as the perpetrator, she’s walks around mad for a couple of minutes and then is lovey-dovey with him.

There are threads here that do fit together and make sense and cohere and there are just as many that don’t. This is not an easily followed film, nor one that lacks intelligence. With greater coherence, it could have been a brilliant film. As it is, it is an intriguing, seriously flawed work that comes this close to being an amazing, resonant film.

I saw this movie when it was first released in the early ’70s and at that time I thought it was one of the best movies ever made. For some reason, though, not only did it bomb, but in those pre-video days it fell into total obscurity. I got to see it one more time at a film festival in 1976. Then a couple of years ago I called into a talk show, where the person who had run the festival was being interviewed, and he told me it was probably lost for all time. You can imagine how thrilled I was when I found it for sale at the video store. I watched this the other night with my family, and it was everything I remembered it to be. It has wonderful character development; phenomenal acting; great cinematography; and a haunting soundtrack that stuck with me for the nearly 30 years between viewings. What more can I say, except buy it, and view it over and over.

The Last Valley, written and directed by the historical novel writer James Clavell. It is co-written by J. B. Pick, whose only other claim to fame is being the screenwriter of the Dean Martin, Matt Helm movie, The Wrecking Crew. That aside this is a well made film with a great story. Filmed on location in the Tyrol area of Italy, these natural and scenic backdrops add historical credibility to this film, as well as providing breathtaking views.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Last Valley! Click Here

The story is about a Captain, played brilliantly by Michael Caine, in charge of a group of multi-national mercineries during the 17th Century Thirty Years War. It is also about a wanderer, seeker, and a man escaping from the ravages of war, Vogel, played by Omar Sharif. There is also a large international supporting cast, who all do their part, most notable being Nigel Davenport as the Village elder, Per Oscarsson as the village priest, and Arthur O’Connell, most known for his part on the 70’s TV show, Chico and the Man.

What started out as Religious Wars, mainly in what is present day Germany, and Alpine Valleys quickly turned into political jocking by petty German Princes, the Holy Roman Emporer, the Kings of France, Sweden, and Denmark. Added to all this war destruction were outbreaks of the plague. The film does a wonderful job with reconstructing this historical backdrop, even with minor details, like when the village priest asks one of the soldiers “Are you a Lutheran Protestant, a Calvin Protestant, or God forbid a heretical Anabaptist or Satan worshiper.” While the Catholics and Protestants, throughout the 17th century, had a love-hate relationship, to put it mildly, the both agreed on their disdain for all things Anabaptist (present day Mennonites, Amish and Hutterites.)

Michael Caine, as the Captain, plays a freebooting leader of a religiously mixed group of mercenaries, who wreak havoc and destruction on any city, town, or village in their way. They have two rules, the Captain calls the shots, and they are not allowed to discuss religion. Omar Sharif plays Vogel, an educated wanderer, all too familiar with the ravages of this hypocritical war. He has been running from it for 20 years. Things are so bad, that even gold and silver, have lost their appeal. All people want is peace and the ability to farm their small part of the world. The film opens with an emaciated Vogel wandering into a small village trying to purchase food and shelter, not seconds later, rumbling down the moutains into the valley are the Captains soldiers, who burn, pillage, and rape with abandon, and some with a self-imposed blessing by God in their warrior pursuits. So, once again Vogel is forced to run, over mountains and valleys until he comes by a deserted, idyllic, little village in a naturally protected valley. But, his peace doesn’t last long before the Captain arrives in the same place. They find the villagers hiding in the mountains. Vogel convinces the captain that this, little piece of paradise, would make a great place to winter over, and he being educated could act as the go-between soldier and peasants. I don’t want to give more away, but against the backdrop of war, fanatical religion, lust, and a search for peace this story continues to unfold.

This is a great movie, running, 2 hours and 5 minutes. Michael Caine is brilliant as the pragmatic, unbelieving warrior. Omar Sharif, as a kind of naive 17th century, Parsifal, plays off of Caine’s cynicism and hatred of all things religious and political. There is great inter-personal relationships in this film also.

This movie should be shown in all world history classes as it provides a great tool for what life was like during the Thirty Years War. 5 Stars Plus for this wonderful movie.

Full Metal Panic! - Mission 04 is available for streaming or downloading.

The fourth “mission” of “Full Metal Panic” perfectly exemplifies the series’ best qualities: the ability to seemingly combine genres and effortlessly pull off the mixture of serious, giant robot warfare with the lighter day-in-the-life-of-a-teen aspect. Mission 04’s first two episodes display the amusing half of “Full Metal,” while the three-part “Rising Wind In The Homelands” tale shows maturity on the part of the series’ directors, who manage to develop the story well enough to emphasize the tragedy of war, a rarity in the usually apocalyptic world of anime.

What’s the series about? Simply put, organizations the world over are after Kaname Chidori, a 16-year-old with innate knowledge of the powerful Black Technology that could revolutionize everything. MITHRIL a group dedicated to maintaining justice, has its top agents, including 16-year old Sagara Sousuke, protecting Chidori.

Two episodes that are borderline filler open the volume. First off, physically adept, battle-worn Major Melissa Mao and clumsy, ditzy-yet-intelligent Captain Tessa Testarossa (who, like Chidori, is a Whispered) find themselves at odds, and agree to settle their differences by having an Armored Slave paintball battle. The Armored Slaves (AS) are the giant robot factor of the show, two-and-a-half story-sized robots armed with guns and knives. The MITHRIL base eagerly awaits the winner of the Mao vs. Testarossa battle as both have agreed that the loser walks around the base…naked.

One of the more useless episodes of the entire series follows. Chidori’s hopes of a summer at the beach are dashed when she unthinkingly agrees to a local AS exhibition with two girl buddies, Sousuke and AS fanatic/nerd and classmate Shinji Kazama. Shinji has a strained relationship with his father, the commander of the local AS troop that often gets thrashed at the exhibitions by another group called the Nerima Dragons. Armored Slave relay races and ping pong follow in a story that doesn’t further the series, but adds flavor by emphasizing that despite their special capabilities, Chidori and Sousuke are still just high-schoolers.

Then comes the real meat. Seemingly indestructible bad guy Gaul (or Gauron) is spotted once again in Sousuke’s homeland of Helmajistan. The man is considered, and rightly so, the most dangerous terrorist in the world, made worse by the fact that he controls an AS armed with Black Technology-driven Lambda Drivers. As such, a squad of five M9 AS are dispatched to assassinate Gaul, with arch-rival Sousuke in tow. Other than the squad’s only female member, who goes by Grey, the rest of the AS pilots treat the much younger Sousuke with disdain to the point of verbally harassing him and sticking a lollipop in his mouth. Things change when the group’s attack plan that Sousuke so strongly objected to falls apart and the squad goes on the run from Gaul and a small army of AS.

The three-part “Homelands” story is arguably the best the series has to offer, an experience that will stick strongly with Sousuke for the rest of “Full Metal Panic.” “Homelands” plays strongly on the connections of four characters to Sousuke: his never-ending personal battle with Gaul; a temporary but powerful bond he builds with Grey; the mixed emotions brought on by the re-appearance of Zaidou, once his closest friend during his days as a Helmajistan child guerilla; and of course the central relationship to Chidori. The battle scenes are effectively laced with short flashes to Chidori walking listlessly on a beach, her mind obviously on Sousuke. The wordless (okay, she says one word) flashes act as a superb tension-building tool. “Homelands” is the darkest and most poignant of all the “Full Metal” episodes, and is accentuated by the fact that it comes right after two “happy” stories.

“Great Teacher Onizuka” meets “Spriggan” meets “Neon Genesis Evangelion.” The art is at its best since the pilot episode, and the music is also in top form. A superb effort; if you want to recruit a new “Full Metal Panic” fan, Mission 04 is the recommended volume, which showcases both sides of the series, and can be enjoyed by someone with little or no knowledge of the show.

Why the heck are there only three episodes on this disk? I just don’t understand. I thought ADV was better than that. I mean, what am I supposed to do with three episdodes? Give me four at the very least, darn you!!

Okay, enough of that. Anyway, this volume was very, very mediocre. This dvd (with only three episodes!) had two filler episodes, with only the last episode actually having any story to it. Don’t get me wrong. Usually I really like fillers because most animes fill them with romantic fluff and that’s usually a lot of fun. However, the extremely addicting romance between Sousuke and Kanami has been kind of dying since the second volume (which was possibly the best set of episdoes IMHO and where they’re relationship really seemed to be building wonderfully).

Instead, the last volume (volume three), and the first filler episode of this volume seem to center around that extremly annoying captain girl. Yeah, the one with the white hair and big boobs. She’s decided that she’s going to be Kaname’s (who I happen to like a lot) little rival in Sousuke’s affections. And my favorite character Kaname was hardly in this volume at all too! She seriously got cheated out on this deal. I swear. Why is that white haired girl getting all the attention? And, with two filler episodes, why the heck did ADV only put three episodes on this disk!

Okay, getting off topic again. So anyway, the first episode on this disk, like I mentioned earlier, was a filler about Tessa (annoying white haired girl). She gets this attitude that she’s as good as any pilot, despite the fact that she absolutely no idea how to use the mechas, and despite the fact that all she does is sit in her little submarine spouting out orders and has no idea what its like on a real battle field. So, she makes a bet with Melissa and they decide to have a battle to decide who’s better. So, Tessa panics because she can’t fight for crap and needs Sousuke to teach her what to do. All the while, Kaname is totally ignored in this episode while Tessa is falling more and more for her hot instructor.

The second episode, (yet another filler) was just plain bad. At least in the first one, Tessa kind of learns something from the experience fighting Melissa and not all is lost. This episode however, was pretty pointless, though somewhat entertaining. They all go off to a lame mecha, army type festival, much to Kaname’s dissappointment, since she really just wanted to chill at the beach. While there, Shinji (kid with glasses) reveals that he hates his dad because his dad never learned how to operate an arm slave mecha and instead became secretary of the army (which is a pretty ridiculous reason to hate your dad if you ask me). So, the episode becomes a lame, cliched, after-school special about learning to love his dad no matter what and that “even secretaries are important too!” (cringe).

The last episode is pretty good, but since its only the first episode of an intense three episode arc, you’re left in the dust just as its starting to get interesting. Once again, Kaname has a very small part and there is literally no Sousuke/Kaname interaction at all, which really disappointed me. The action, is of course, awesome though and you can tell its really going to get exciting. Overall, a disappointing volume. However, I look forward to the next one because I’m know it’ll pick up from there.

The summer of 1940 in Martinique as people began to choose sides is the setting for another Howard Hawks masterpiece. William Faulkner, who had adapted Raymond Chandler’s complex novel for the director’s other Bogart screen classic, “The Big Sleep,” expanded a thin Hemingway story with writing partner Jules Furthman into another. This is sort of “Casablanca” with grit rather than gloss, and is just as enjoyable. “To Have and Have Not” does, in fact, outshine that film with its upbeat ending, and marks the real contrast between the two films, despite their similarities.

Bogart is Harry Morgan, trying to stay neutral about the local politics while he and his pal Eddie (Walter Brennan) take tourists ocean fishing in the waters of Martinique. His pal Frenchy (Marcel Dalio) wants him to use his boat to pick up a couple that will put him square in the middle of all that’s going on both in Martinique and the rest of the world as the Germans make their move across the globe.

Morgan is fending off getting involved just fine until his latest fishing customer gets knocked off by accident before he can pay up. Complicating things further for Morgan is a newcomer named Marie Browning (Lauren Bacall) who sort of attaches herself to him from the moment they meet. She has come from Brazil by way of Trinidad and ends up in Martinique only because she doesn’t have money to go any further. They seem a perfect fit despite all the sparring between them; a point driven home by her response to Eddie’s question about bees. The viewer knows at that moment that she and Harry are a match made in Hollywood heaven.

Brennan is just terrific as Harry’s old pal in constant need of a drink to keep the shakes at bay. He thinks he’s looking after Harry when in fact it’s Harry who’s looking after him. The trademark male world of Howard Hawks is much in evidence here, as Bogart’s autonomy begins to crack only when he finds his match in Bacall. Like many of Hawks’ characters, Morgan lives by his own code and his own rules, and only breaks them out of loyalty to someone else. Another Hawks trademark of the sizing up of people from the inside out is also much in evidence here. Bogart and Bacall never even speak the other’s name in this film: she calls him “Steve” and he refers to her as “Slim” throughout the entire film.

When Harry finally agrees to pick up Frenchy’s pals in the Resistance to earn enough money to get Slim home, he gets more than he bargained for in more ways than one. It convinces Slim to stay on because she now knows for sure that “Steve” is the right guy. She gets a job singing for the piano player at the Hotel Martinique, Cricket (Hoagy Charmichael). And after a patrol boat takes a potshot at one of his passengers, his very beautiful wife begins to warm up to Harry in a big hurry, causing a bit of jealousy on Slim’s part. Doloros Moran is very nice and quite pretty as that wife, Hellene de Bursac.

There are a ton of great exchanges between Bacall and Bogart here, the most famous being the “just whistle” scene. There are many others equally as good, however, including an exchange about strings that has Bacall walking around Bogart, and a great line from Bacall about walking home if it weren’t for all that water. It is this latter exchange, and one other about Slim’s lack of a reaction when being slapped that Hawks uses to highlight the personal baggage both Harry and Marie are bringing to the table.

A young Bacall looks gorgeous in gowns by Milo Anderson, and Sid Hickox’s photography gives the film a real feel of a tiny island with palm trees lining the streets. Bogart’s Harry will eventually engage in the fight when he decides he likes the people on one side and doesn’t like the people on the other side. It is very much both a Hawks and Bogart type moment, the personal moral code of the anti-hero coming fully into play.

This is a fun film with great characters, lots of atmosphere, and an ending the polar opposite of “Casablanca.” The song “How Little We Know” from Hoagy Charmichael and Johnny Mercer never amounted to much compared to the more famous “As Time Goes By” from “Casablanca,” but works nicely with the mood Hawks created for his second film with Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. If you’re looking for a big dose of Bogie and Bacall, and want the kind of ending “Casablanca” didn’t have, then “To Have and Have Not” is a sure bet to please you. A fine film and a true screen classic.

Watching this movie can give you the vapors. Ye gods, has anyone’s big screen debut been as sizzling as that of the 19-year-old Lauren Bacall’s? Even 60 years later, Bacall’s sensual presence absolutely smolders on the screen. While this is not the most gripping Bogart performance one is likely to think of, he is nonetheless fascinating to watch in this film. As the film progresses, it is unmistakeable that he is absolutely HOOKED by his co-star.

The storyline itself is a conventional thriller for its time, although it has the distinction of being the product of two of the greatest American writers, Hemingway & Faulkner. Not that they would have seen much merit in that — Hemingway had a lukewarm attitude towards this work, and Faulkner hated every minute he spent in Hollywood, prostituting his talent (as he saw it).

This movie is not on a dramatic par with “Casablanca” or “The Maltese Falcon,” and the subsequent Bogart-Bacall “Key Largo” has far more suspense & tension within it. However, none of these films can equal “To Have and Have Not” for on-screen chemistry, and there is indeed something to be said for that. In fact, I would be hard-pressed to come up with a film that surpasses “To Have and Have Not” in terms of chemistry, and that should be enough for anyone to consider this a classic.

This volume begins an intriguing series about a world in which vampires and men have an uneasy truce, that is broken by the presence of a hybrid race of vampires whose victims become their slaves. The intended audience for the series is hard to pinpoint — there is pretty extreme violence and some talk of sexuality, but the dialogue is pretty simplistic and seems pitched at the same level as the Pokemon series. The animation is pretty standard — not bad but nothing fantastic. The characters, though, are interesting and the seemingly accidental incident the sets the action in motion gradually reveals a pretty elaborate set of rival concerns, promising lots of future developments in the series. The inclusion of both adult and children characters adds depth — it is intriguing to see young vampires, and their affection for the younger vampires takes away the one-dimensional serious edge of the older characters. Apart from the strangeness of sexual tension in a film that seems pitched to 13 year olds (come to think of it, that is not so strange and what is strange is that in American animation hints of sexuality almost never appear), the main vampire Jiro and his new friend Mimiko have a real chemistry that builds gradually in the series. Overall, this is a fairly amusing and intriguing series — and while I am not really the target audience I had fun watching it.

A decade ago, humans and vampires fought side-by-side to exterminate the Kowloon Bloodline, a strain of vampires that converted other vampires to their bloodline with a bite, and killed the humans they bit. The only way humans could be converted to any other vampire bloodline is by drinking the blood of a vampire. One of the most famous vampire warriors from this conflict was Jiro Mochizuki, also known as the Silver Blade.

Warning: Some minor plot spoilers ahead.

Jiro and his brother Kotaro are on a ship heading to Japan and the Special Zone, where vampires live in peace alongside humans, when a Suppression Team from OCC, the Order Coffin Company, boards the ship. The intent of the Suppression Team is to eliminate a group of vampire stowaways because they believe one of the deadly Kowloon Children is among them. Kotaro stumbles into the fight and appears to be in danger when brother Jiro, who is grumpy when he wakes up, appears to save the day. Unfortunately, Kotaro ends up in the water and Jiro, for whom water is dangerous, must dive in to save him.

In the second episode, we learn that Jiro and Kotaro, who looked doomed in the previous episode, have survived. However, they survived only to end up in the midst of yet another battle with the Suppression Team from the OCC. This time Jiro fares worse, but distracts the Suppression Team long enough for Kotaro to get away.

After more excitement and adventures, Jiro and Kotaro come together once again, but this time we learn that indeed one of the Kowloon Children was in the group of stowaways. Unfortunately, the Kowloon Child has power comparable to Jiro’s own and the Kowloon Child kidnaps Kotaro, intent on entering the Special Zone where vampires are available for conversion into the forbidden and deadly bloodline. Can Jiro, Compromiser Mimiko Katsuragi, vampire Kelly Wong and Kotaro stop the Kowloon Child? You will have to watch and see!

If you take away the subplots, this movie treads little in the way of new ground. However, each episode contains additional elements that are intriguing and interesting. For example, each episode contains a flashback at the beginning that will take another eight episodes to understand in this twelve episode series. Each episode also feeds us yet more detail about Jiro and Kotaro, who has another name, which I leave for you to discover. We also see pieces of other characters who will undoubtedly become more important as the story progresses. The spice added to this story leaves me wanting more. I was somewhat confused until somewhere in the second episode, but by episode three I was hooked and I wish I had the other eight episodes now.

An aside: I was taken aback when Jiro smashed Kotaro’s face into a deck plate, but that was before I realized that Kotaro was a vampire and having his face smashed into a steel deck was hardly more than the equivalent of a slug in the shoulder for a human.

A wish: I want a hat like Jiro’s. I have no idea how that hat remained upright, but his hat was cool.

Extras on the DVD include audio commentaries in Japanese with English subtitles, TV spots, trailers and the opening and closing songs without the text.

I am far from being an expert on anime, but I enjoyed these four episodes. The action was fast and the story, while initially confusing, unfolded fast enough that I picked up on it quickly. What might have been a run-of-the-mill vampire story ended up keeping me glued to the television and wanting to pop the next, soon to be available, DVD into the DVD player. The graphics were excellent and the colors were typically brilliant. Incidentally, these episodes are in wide screen format (1.78:1), which is great for those with big screen televisions. I think fans of anime and fans of vampire movies will find these episodes sufficiently interesting to want them for their collection. I know I will acquire the rest when they are available.

Enjoy!
